Really Just Teething?

My 7.5 month-old has been having a really tough time lately. I took him to the doctor on Monday, and she said it was just teething, but I have some doubts. He's had a low fever (100.5 deg F) for 3 days. It goes away with Motrin or Tylenol, but comes back before the medication wears off. He also has a runny nose and mild diarrhea. The main thing is that he is just SOOO upset most of the time (especially when the medication starts to wear off). He spent most of last night screaming (even when I was holding him), and never slept for more than an hour and a half at a time. It seemed like his stomach could be bothering him, but maybe the stomach got upset from the crying?? I know everything I mentioned are teething symptoms, but the pain and fever seem to be awfully severe to me, especially given that I am using tylenol or motrin. Do you think I should bring him back to the doctor? Or does this just sound like teething?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You all were right! That first tooth made its appearance today. Thank goodness! Maybe tonight we can both get a little sleep ... Thank you for your support!

Yeah, it definitely sounds like teething to me as well. The fever is low grade and completely normal. As for the runny nose, my daughter get a very runny nose when any of her top teeth are coming in. I was thrown off at first, too. I was told I could alternate Tylenol and Motrin if the pain seemed really bad. You may want to ask your pedi about that. Good luck!!

As long as the fever is low grade and the snot is clear, it's probably just teething. They get stomach upset and diarrhea from the excess saliva and snot.

I also like Hyland's Teething Tablets for teething. It helps the baby calm down as well as relieving the pain. This is in addition to the tylenol and motrin. It's an immediate relief before the other kicks in.

Good Luck!

It sounds like teething. However, that being said, if the screaming at night and fever continues for more than another day or two, don't rule out ear infection due to the runny nose. My youngest had a tough time teething- runny nose, some loose stools, sleep disturbance, lack of appetite, etc.; and without fail he got an ear infection almost every time he had new teeth coming in. I have the advantage that my husband is a physician assistant and owns an otoscope, so I could have him check the ears before I went in and paid an unnecessary co-pay. So if you think you can wait it out, I'd wait another night or two and see if the symptoms subside as the tooth pops through, or if the symptoms continue and he needs to be seen.

C.,
It really sounds to me like he is teething! My 9 month old is teething lately and I am going through the same thing with him! He isn't sleeping for more than a couple of hours at a time, and especially at night, he screams and seems to be in a lot of pain. Have you tried teething tablets? Those seem to help my son a little bit..also try giving your son a teether that has been put in the freezer, that may help ease some of his discomfort. I hope he feels better soon!

Try the over the counter Hyland tablets. Worked well for my toddler. Also, the diarrhea is a sympton of teething. Also try frozem wash cloths for your baby to chew on. Another toy that is organic and that my toddler loved is Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether, Brown/ White

Good luck.

Sounds like teething to me, too. I would continue to use the Tylenol and call the pedi and let her know what is going on. Maybe she can reccommend something more.
