My daughter will be one next month. We have the book What to Expect the First Year. My husband and I read it and found it helpful. Has anyone read the book What to Expect the Toddler Years? Whs it helpful? Is there another book that's better? This is our only child. Thanks.

Harvey Karp's "Happiest Toddler on the Block" is a great book, and the DVD for it is REALLY helpful in understanding the "caveman speak" that he describes in it. The video is kind of hokey, but very useful. We got it from Netflix. I watched the DVD before reading the book.

happiest toddler on the block

when she's a bit older and starting to act like a two year old, get Love and Logic.

we do have that book as well, but I can tell you that you end up referring to it much less, probably b/c you have settled into parenthood and you know your child and b/c they go thru less changes. We read the 1rst one all the time, but not the second. J.

I got What to Expect the Toddler Years and it was ok. I didn't pay full price for it, so I'm not really out any money! There is some useful information, but some things in it made me feel worse! I found "The Everything Toddler Book", you know the green and white "Everything" books for every subject under the sun. It had lots of good tips in it. I haven't read it cover to cover, but looked at it as a reference quite a bit. Plus it was easy to find the topics I wanted information on.

Hi C.!

I have the "What to Expect the Toddler Years", but don't like it as well as the other "What to Expect..." books. I really like the American Academy of Pediatrics book, "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, Birth to Age 5." It was recommended to us by our childrens' pediatrician and has been a great reference for EVERYTHING!

Good luck finding the right book for you. Have a great day!

Jacqueline

I read a book when my two oldest girls were 2 and 4(now 9 and 11)called 1 2 3 Magic! It might be more helpful when your daughter is 2 but I still use this method and it still works for me! I hope this helps!

I wasn't that impressed with What to Expect the Toddler Years, but there was a handful of good information. I'd say get a used copy, then get "Happiest Toddler on the Block" (I hear there's a video or something that goes with it as well...maybe some other mama can confirm or deny that).
Your main concern won't be what to expect, but how to react when it happens...when you realize that your precious bundle has slowly usurped your authority and taken control of your household. I don't really know how to say when you know that's happened, but you'll call a girlfriend in tears because you "can't take it anymore" and "will never have another child" (of course, you will find out you're pregnant soon after this conversation), and you need to go to Starbucks right away.

I had to edit my response to agree with the mom about getting "Parenting with Love and Logic" after she's 2.

I do have the What To Expect The Toddler Years and I do like it very much. It has had some helpful hints especially with some of our eating issues, and I like how it really does hit upon a lot of the things I have questioned, and it had explained a lot for me.
