Reaction to One-year Vaccination? Drowsiness and Slower Reaction Time

My son turned one year old last week and received his one-year vaccinations on Tuesday. Today is Thursday and he still sleeps more than he did before. Is that normal? Also, I have noticed that he does not have as much control over his limbs as he did before. The change is very subtle. It is almost like he is unable to react to certain situations fast enough. Like bracing himself when he falls which he did well before he got his vaccinations. I was reading on the vaccination facts sheet that the drowsiness is one of the side effects of the vaccinations and maybe the slowed reaction time is part of the consequence of the drowsiness but I'm just not sure. Has anybody else seen a reaction like this in their child after a vaccination?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your responses. By Friday, my son was doing a lot better. I did not take him in to see the pediatrician. Some of you recommended not doing the vaccines anymore. That is not an option for us since my family lives overseas and we do a lot of traveling. So, he will have to be vaccinated for sure. What I did find out, is, that I can do an alternate vaccination schedule where he will only get one or two shots per visit. That way his little body doesn't have to work so hard to "detoxify". It takes a little longer to get all of the vaccines and more visits to the doctor but it's worth it for us. This last time we went in, they drew blood and he got 4 shots. I find this excessive and unnecessary for his physical well-being and emotional well-being. Incidentally, I do not believe that there is a link between vaccines and autism so I am not worried about him ending up autistic. I have said many times that I would rather have a hurt little boy from the shots than a very sick little boy or a dead little boy from a disease that could have been prevented. My mom just told me about a story of a mom who went to a dr's office with her 3 months old little girl. Next to them was a 2 year old little girl that was sick and was never vaccinated. Come to find out the two year old girl was sick with a disease that she carried b/c she was not vaccinated. The 3 months old girl got also sick b/c she was exposed from the 2 year old girl and later died. That is such a sad story. Anyway, we will continue with getting our son vaccinated just not so many vaccinations again at one time. Thanks everybody for your encouragement. I really appreciate it.

Hi N.,

I too have had my children later in life...I was 32 when I had my son & 41 when I had my daughter. God blessed us to with 2 WONDERFUL healthy children! We have chosen NOT to vaccinate our children. They are 10 & 2 and are VERY healthy. My son did have one set of vaccines when he was born, after we had heard a horrible story from my chiropractor about a child that almost died because of being vaccinated, we chose not to do anymore. Our son has been on antibiotics once in his life...he had a double ear infection at the age of 1, and my husband wanted to take him to the emergency room & they prescribe them...I only gave him 1 many be 2 doses, took him to the chiropractor & it was gone within 2 days. Our daughter was born at home with a Midwife present, and had never even seen a Dr. of Medicine until she was 2. I took her just to have her ears checked, I could see a big ball of wax in her ear. They didn't do anything about it, said it would fall out on it's own. We give our kids supplements to help keep their immune systems very healthy. I pray that you & your husband take a little time to educate yourselves about vaccines & autism.

Here is my friends' website to check out about the issues with vaccines.

This friend of mine lives in Franklin, TN. She is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and has been working with over 200 autistic children...in her research, she has found a link with vaccines & electropollution. Please take the time to educate yourself about vaccines. There are ways to get around them...don't let the medical field badger you. Make informed choices where your kids are concerned. They are our future...we need to do everything to protect their health, and if these things that are "suppose" to be good for them, then why is it that 1 in 150 children are now diagnosed with autism? A good question to ask yourself and your Dr. I have a wonderful questionaire that I would like to send you if you are interested. Just email me back & I will attach it. Gets you and the Dr. thinking!

Hope and pray to here from you.

Hi,

Please don't let everyone here scare you with their anti-vaccine stances. Listen, I could get on my soapbox about the benefits of vaccinating, but that is NOT what you asked. Society today makes parents feel guilty and absolutely terrified for vaccinating. The interesting thing is that vaccines are actually safer now than they have ever been, regardless of what others may want you to believ.

The drowsiness is normal. Your baby may also have a slight fever and will be sore/tender in the area where the shots were given. It could be that you are worried to begin with,(how could you not be with everyone trying to tell you not to vaccinate) therefore misinterpretting the sleepiness for slowness of reaction. usually all the symptoms disappear within 3 or 4 days. If you still do not see an improvement by later today, then give his dr a call, that is what they are there for. Hope this helps

You are going to worry yourself sick if you continue to think about this. It's completely normal for a child to be very drowsy and sometimes even sick for atleast a couple days afterwards. I understand your reasoning for being worried, there is a lot of talk out there about autism and stuff, but if you look at the statistics, it's highly unlikely that your child is having a type of reaction like this. I would give it until about Monday, and then if your still worried, call your nurse. Don't be scared though, it's probably the normal reaction a lot of kids have to it. I always try to think of things this way when I feel I'm playing the waiting game, "It is what it is". If I'm worried about something, I say this to myself. That way I feel strength through God that "it is what it is" and whatever that may be, he chose me because I'm strong enough to go through it. So, wait it out, I'm sure he's just fine!!!

I too like the others would take him in. I do not vaccinate my children anymore because of the what ifs and hidden truths about potential harm. I would really keep a good eye on him and document his degression/progression with times and dates if you decide you want to report his case to VARS. I fortunatly haven't witnessed a dramatic change in my children after vaccines...but I soon realized how much our chidren are guine pigs and the potentials that may lie ahead. It's such a double edged sword. One piece of advice I would give is that if you still decide to vaccinate your child do so that he is not getting a combo vaccine. Split them up...more pokes but less of an overload. Another piece of advice is to read read read. I have 2 seperate accounts where my friends' childern had "odd" issues following vaccines which made me want to educate myself. After all, why would they give these vaccines to children if they were so safe right??? HUH that's what we are led to believe. I'll pray for your sons recovery.

Take him in. I do not mean to scare you but vaccines have been known to cause serious issues. No doctor will ever tell you that, but you can find many websites concerning vaccine reactions and your doctor no matter how small the reaction is suppose to report it. It has been known that boys sometimes have more reaction than girls, and I am sure if you tell the doctor what I have said in a round about way he will say I am nuts, but how ever you take this you are better safe just incase it is not the "socalled normal reaction"

Call your pediatrician with your concerns. I know it is after hours, but, a Dr. should be on call. Just the fact that you have noticed a change in the level of consciousness is worrisome. Anytime you have a question regarding changes in your child --- call your pediatrician. I If you would be more comfortable --- call a local E.R. and ask to speak to a nurse or Dr. Some hospitals even have a nurseline. I was always fearful of vaccinations raising my boys --- but I know there was a recent problem with infant vaccinations being recalled.

Hope this helps --- please remember ---- When in Doubt --- Check it Out.

My son is 3 now. The reaction to your son geting his one year old shot is normal. I would give it a week and if he does not start doing better then take him to the doctors. After my son got his shot he slept alot too. :)
