Has anyone had a child with a reaction to the flu shot? I took both my 3 year old and 5 year old yesterday afternoon to get their flu shots. My 3 year old is fine...just a bit cranky and needy. My 5 year old son has had a reaction...he has been running a fever, no appetite, and he was up a couple of times to throw up a bit. I have been dosing him with tylenol as needed. He was like this the last time he got his regular shots for starting kindergarten back in Feb. However, I attributed it to him having 4 shots at once. He was fine within a day or two. Since he is in school now, I really need for him to have the flu shot to protect him. I don't recall him having this sort of reaction last time he had the flu shot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So my son started complaining that his neck hurt this afternoon. SO, I called the after hours pediatrician and brought him in. He had actually picked up strep throat from school. So he is now on antibiotics but will be fine. Apparently the neck pain is common with the sore throat.

This is common with the flue shot, which is why my children never get it. My hubby has to for work, and every time he does he gets those flu like symptoms, yet none of us ever get the flu, even though my kids and I all skip it.

The flu shot probably does have h1n1 in it, which made my grandma fatally ill last year (the flu shot, not contracting h1n1 naturally!). I'd look into getting a different one or not getting one at all. I don't, neither do my kids and we have gotten the flu but never very bad. I also personally wouldn't do four shots at one visit either. Just my $.02!

I refuse to give my children the flu shot. I have had it three times in my life and all three times I have come down with a fever, chills, tired and all around sicker then sick... Three people in my family have the same issues...the rest do just fine with the shot...

The CDC can say whatever they want to say but the flu shot makes me sick!

Could be the sameiwht your kiddo!

My kids have never had a reaction but I did. I felt TERRIBLE after it. I couldn't get out of bed for 24 hours. I just did what I could to stay comfortable and luckily it didn't last as long as the flu does. I do not get the shot anymore but my kids still do.

When any shots are given, the Pediatrician should have given you a fact sheet, on it?
Did you get this.
On that paper, it will clearly list, possible reactions, to any vaccine.

It takes a body, about 2 weeks, for the body to build up immunity, once a shot is given.

Sometimes, a fever will arise after a shot...and discomfort. And when in discomfort, kids do get needy and fussy.

If anything, call your Pediatrician's office.

But I think, this is a normal reaction.
But, look on the Fact Sheet, about the shot, that the Doctor should have given you.

I always get the Flu shot every year because I have Asthma. I have never gotten a reaction.
My kids get it too, the nasal spray version. And have been fine.

Vomitting is not a side effect of the flu shot (it is a side effect of the nasal spray) side effects from the shot are soreness at the injection sight and fever (that's a sign the immune system is doing it's job) the flu shot does not make you sick it's not a live virus in the shot (unlike the spray, mar, and chickenpox) it's most likely that your son was already getting a stomach bug (remember you are contagious before you have actual symptoms) And now his symptoms are full blown. If you are concerned call your ped but to me it sounds like coincidence especially with the kids being back to school.

Well if I remember right the flu shot now has the H1N1 in it as well. We have always gotten the shots in my family and no one has had a reaction but I would call the doctor and see what he/she says!

It could be a coincidence or a reaction to the shot. I have all kinds of reactions to shots and meds including vomiting, fever and everything you described.
