RE: Natural Help for Mosquito Bites

My 6 year old has been having the worst time with mosquito bites. We relocated to the east coast about three years ago and never had a problem when living in California or Oregon. The bites turn into large, hard lumps after a day. I have told her not to scratch them, but she will rub them, which doesn't help at all. The doctors have told me to use hydrocortisone and benadryl. She has even been placed on antibiotics because of the swelling previously. I would love to find something for her that isn't a steroid or will make her drowsy.

What can I do next?

It is an old home remedy, but it might help you. We used to wipe fresh mosquito bites with aromatic spirits of ammonia to relieve the inflammation. My father used to say that it neutralized the part of the mosquito saliva that was irritating. I don't know if that is the case, but I do know that it worked, if you got to the bites fairly quickly. I don't know if that treatment has anything to do with it, but as I reached adulthood, I stopped getting the itchy welts after a mosquito bite, now they are only a little red spot that does not itch. I hope this helps, good luck finding the aromatic spirits of ammonia.

Hi, E. - Melaleuca oil is excellent on bug bites, bee stings, burns, cuts, etc. Really helps with the itching, is very soothing, and speeds healing. Sol-U-Mel is an excellent bug repellant & totally safe to use on children. Hope this helps. Good luck. N. B.

We moved here from California one year ago and I am experiencing the same thing! I gave my daughter Benedryl the other night because the one bite was swollen and the itch kept her from sleeping. Do you remember how the mosquitos in California had a high pitched sound when they would fly next to you? Out here, the mosquitoes are silent and attack. It's horrible!

I just use cortizone to treat them. But for a non-chemical way to repell them I use white vinegar. Its cheap and its safe to use on my newborn too!

Hi, sorry to hear about the problem. I have found that MelaGel from Melaleuca is a really effective and natural treatment. Melaleuca's products are natural and not harmful if swallowed, my now 5year old has eaten jsut about ALL of their products, including the cleaning products. Check out saferforyourhome.com ar e-mail me @ ____@____.com, I found out recently that using incense sticks stuck in the ground, or in sand filled buckets up high, around where ever you are helps to keep them away, find an arome you like and have fun.
