HI, my daughter is 9 mos old and for the past month she has barely had a voice and when she does it is very raspy and sounds whistly at times. The voice she used to have we have not heard AT ALL in the month, not even once. She had been to the peditrician three times in the past month for this problem and he kept saying it was nothing. On friday he advised us to take her straight to Rainbow babies and children ER. We took her there, she saw a ENT and they did a scope they said everything was normal but her to come back to a full anatomy scope. Has anyone else had this problem with their babies and if so what was the outcome? Thanks.

What can I do next?

My baby girl(now 9.5 months old) also had this problem in the spring. When she cried, it was like nothing would come out. A couple weeks went by and she had to get on anitbiotics for an ear infection. However I do not think the two are related. After 10 days of being the on the antibiotics her voice slowly came back. Currently my hubby and I have been having on/off soar throats and my voice is kind of raspy. Back in the spring the doc told us to put the cool mist humidifier on in her room at night..that seemed to really help. Didnt clear it up right away but it did in about 5-7 days.
Good luck. this weather now stinks for illnesses.

Acid reflux comes to mind. Has she ever had that problem?

We were just at the chest doctor (pulmonologist) for the same issue! Our almost 9 month old son has been raspy/wheezing for almost a month, with no other major symptoms. The pediatrician had him on steriods and albulterol inhaler for the past few weeks, but it wasn't helping. The pulmonologist told us he simply has reflux due to an immature esophagus that should be fixed by age 1. He has been crying going to sleep the last week or so, and while we thought it may be due to teething, I'm thinking it may be connected to this. We're going to incline his mattress and that should help. She also gave us Pepcid to take before eating to relieve the reflux. Hopefully this helps you as well!

Find someone near you who will do voice instruction with her at her age. I will take kids her age (and have) just to teach them how to breathe and use their voices. That can go a long way even IF there were to be congestion or another problem.

Hi A.,

yahoo just had a news article about voice problems--it said not to ignore them, so you are doing the right thing by getting her checked out. I'm not sure , but I may be able to send you a copy if you are interested--send me a message if you are.

Good luck

Hi A., this will sound really odd but it may help. Try putting Vicks salve on the bottom of her feet and then put her socks on. Do it for a few nights and see if that makes any difference. I know if she would have a cold/cough it would make a world of difference as I just did this for my granddaughter. Please let me know if it helps or not it will NOT hurt her. There may even be vicks salve for babies now but if not as long as she doesn't get it in her eyes she will be ok.
