Rash/Protein Problem?

My 6 month old has had a bad eczema looking rash on her head, face, hands and redness behind her knees and "allergy" spots on her belly like when they are allergic to a food since she was about 3-4 months old. Dr. said it was a dairy allergy. It got much better on soy but still occurred when she ate green beans, applesauce and a few other foods. He said that green beans counteract with the soy but he didn't know about the rest. She then tried Alimentum (boy is that horrible!) but the little she drank she would spit up it all plus her solid foods over 4 hour time period. I made the decision 2 1/2 days into it to put her back on soy. She got a RX cream that you can only use a few days at a time an cleared it up. After a week, it slowly comes back. She scratches her head all the time! The Dr. think it has something to do with Protein but is unsure - I put her on Good Start Soy and it is a little better, but it's coming back again. Does anyone know anything about this or have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

I don't have any advice, as I am in a similar boat with my baby, with the exception of him being breastfed. I am interested to read your responses. I just posted late yesterday and have received only 2 responses. I'm sure there must be many other moms out there whose little ones have allergies.

Good luck to you.

Our son was blood tested to determine what he's allergic to. Did your pedi do that or was it based on reactions you saw? Maybe a test would let you what what he's allergic to.

You need to request that they test him for what he is allergic to. There is a blood test called the RAST that can test for the most common food and skin allergies. My son also has eczema and is also Milk soy protien intolerant. Of all his symptoms, the eczema was the least bothersome to him. But, if your ped. thinks it is related to protien, I would defintely see a GI specialist. Our GI specialist is adamant that he be allergy tested before his first birthday. If I were you, I would see a allergy specialist too so you can make sure you are doing whats best for your little one. Keep in mind too that when you switch your kiddos formula it can take many many days before you know if it will help. We were told it can take up to a month before the baby's system gets completely adjusted. My sons sympotms improved 100% when I quite breastfeeding and got him on Elecare formula( which is a presciption formula free of any milk/soy protien). E-mail me if you want any more info. I don't want to bore you!

Hello E.,

Could your baby also be allegic to soy? My godson had wheat/dairy/soy/nuts allergies before he was 1. you need to test your baby and try different formula. and if she's having problems w/ the protein in green beans, ask the allergist if you need to be careful w/ peanuts. (peanuts are part of the bean family)

check her soap, lotion, etc. My daughter used to get eczema on her head when she was exposed to latex... later it developed into asthma.

when the time comes for her birthday cake, check the Really Great Foods company. http://reallygreatfoods.com/
baking mixes for people with special dietary needs,
including gluten free, wheat free, soy free, dairy free and casein free baking mixes.
my favorite is the pineapple flavor. all their products are great. just read the ingredients to see which one suits your needs.

Good luck and get her blood tested =)

Goats' milk. I went to Whole Foods when my son was allergic to corn syrup (in most formulas) and then had collick. They said to try goats' milk. It is the closest to real Mother's milk as there is. It changed our lives!

A couple of other things that the dermatologist told me (I have eczema). Don't use hot water to bathe or wash, use luke warm water. Use lotions with aloe and no perfumes. Drink as much water as possible to hydrate your skin. That's all I can remember...
