My son has had a bright red rash on his cheeks on and off (mostly on) since he was about 12 mos old. The ped. just told me to put cortisone cream on it that it was no big deal. But I wanted to try to find the root cause of it and haven't been able to. I've taken him to two natural docs who can't figure it out either. I've tried all sorts of herbal, homeopathic lotions to no avail. He's not allergic to anything (except cow milk which he never gets), I've switched to natural detergent, changed his bath soap, checked for all sorts of allergies. I looked on the label of the ibuprofren which I occasionally give him for teething pain, and it says that a rash can be a side effect, so I stopped giving him that and the rash is still there. The rash is only on his face. It was also suggested to me that teething (his molars are coming in now) could be causing some back up congestion too. Anyone have any ideas I haven't thought of?
I've had him checked for all kinds of food allergies / sensitivities and he doesn't have any. Despite that, I've taken out wheat, etc etc etc to see what happens and nothing changes, so I don't think it is food related.
Talk to a dermatologist and an allergist. As I can't see the actual rash or palpate it make sure the child is also bchecked for diabetes and celiac. Make sure that you aren't wearing makeup that gets rubbed on the child as some who only have face rashes snuggle with mom and then react to either foundation or moisturizers.
My daughter gets the same thing except more than just the face. She has a couple of things though. First she has very sensitive skin so we only use Vaseline and Eucerine calming cream. She cannot have wipes anywhere near her face or she breaks out. She is also allergic to all dairy, you would be surprised at what has cows milk in it. You have to be very careful as some ingredients go by other names that would not indicate dairy but it is.
The dermatologist said it was rosacea. I would take him to a dermatologist.
My son was allergic to, of all things, bananas...which are in like ALL baby foods practically. He would have a similar rash on his face nearly constantly. I figured it out via an elimination diet. It's very frustrating. Once you figure out what it is, you can avoid it though and it's much better.
Good luck.
Sounds like a food allergy.
