Mamma's, my son has a very itchy rash that just popped up around his privates. I gave him some benedryl but it seems to still be there and itchy, just not as bad. Any ideas? Could it be a yeast infection or some type of jock itch and if so what can I put on it for a 17 month old? Is over the counter meds ok for such a little guy? Any advise would be greatly appericated.

What can I do next?

You can use a light layer of cortisone cream on it to help with the itch. But, if it's a yeast infection, it won't go away without prescription meds.

My daughter had a yeast infection years ago, and I remember putting Lotrimin (the athlete's foot cream) on her bum.

Hello L.,

one more suggestion... don't let him sit in bath water too long. that's a problem for boys. they end up w/ urinary track infections. if you want to let him play in the water, don't put soap or bubbles in until you're ready to wash him and get him out. the ingredients in bath soap can be irritating him too. adding a bit of cranberry juice and yogurt (and/or acidophilus) to his diet helps w/ UTI's and yeast infections. ~C.~

My DD (12 mo) has had both a yeast infection and foliculitis (sp?), which led to persistent rashes on her privates. If it's yeast, as others have said, you'll need a prescription. Foliculitis, on the other hand, is an inflamation of the hair folicles (obviously there's no hair there yet, but they already have the folicles). My DD just had this last week, and the pedi said it came from chaffing due to a combination of learning to walk and the warmer weather. Treatment is just to spread some neosporin on the rash at each diaper change. It got much much better in a day, and was gone by day 3. Hope this helps, and your little guy is comfy soon!

You might call the doc. I know my son had a yeast rash as a baby and it was itchy and very painful for him. The doc prescribed some oral meds that he took.

To soothe it in the mean time, you can set him in tepid water with oatmeal (uncooked) in it. Also, feed him all the yogart he will eat.
