Raise for Nanny After 1 Year?

We are on our 1 year 'anniversay' with our nanny. I am wondering what other parents do at this time? Do you give a bonus, a raise? We are really strapped as I had to take a pay cut at my company and my husband is in the mortgage industry. I would like to give her a raise, but it would really strap us and probably put us in the hole every month. Do I tell her that and that I will giver her a raise when I get mine? Do I just give her a raise and hope the economy changes soon? Any ideas on a gift for her?
Thanks in advance for all your advise!

I think just for thinking of her is wonderful. When I was a full time nanny, the family I worked for always gave me a Christmas/Holiday bonus and a small gift on the anniversary. A gift card for a manicure/pedicure or to my favorite store was always appreciated ;) with a nice Thank You card to top it off.

I don't know of anyone who is getting a raise right now. I would just say that due to the economic conditions, you aren't in a position to afford a raise for her but give her a little token of your appreciation. Good luck!

My thoughts on this are to just tell her you would love to give her one but with the economy you can't right now. That you will talk about it again in 6 months. although it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and get her a gift card or something like that and say how much you appreciate her work for you.

I dont know what you are paying her but I work for an au pair agency and our weekly stipend just went up. Since we are mandated by the department of state, aupairs weekly stipend is based on the federal min. wage. The cost of an au pair is $340/week. Thats 45 hours of childcare and is not based on the number of children you have. It is live in but it is something to base your decision on. Good luck.

I'm a nanny and have been with the same family for just over a year and have not received a raise. I do know that they have gotten raises which really only has afforded them to just get by a little better than before. Although I would love a raise just like everybody else I do realize it's not the norm nowadays. I would have loved a annivesary gift though. Even just a gift card for a pizza or a paid day off. If someone is loyal to you for that long then showing them you appreciate them is a good way to keep them happy.

I agree with the other posters. No one is getting raises right now. Actually most are taking pay cuts, if they have jobs. I didn't give raises to my staff this year but sincerely explained that I financially could not afford to do so. I wished I could, and expressed to them how valuable they are but that raises would occur when I could at a later date. THey all understand. Honesty helps everyone understand and be on the same page. If it puts you in hole each month that isn't good for anyone. Hang in there. The media tells us things are looking good!
