I Googled "rainbow sweater for kids" and found several options. It won't let me paste links in, but I found a cute rainbow hoodie for less than $20.
Mamas & Papas-
My kid is after a rainbow sweater. Not sure where he got this idea in his head. Nonetheless, I haven't been able to find anything that comes close at the shops, even in the girls section. I'm willing to try my hand at knitting or crocheting one (it's just like riding a bike right, it'll come back to me). I was thinking of getting the type of yarn that shifts from one color to the next, but I am not sure what it is called. Any crafty mommas with suggestions? Also, how do I know how thick the yarn is or what sized needle or hook I would need to use if I am ordering online. I buying yarn at woolworths for crafts projects, but that store has since shuttered. I would probably order from amazon.
Thanks,
F. B.
One Perfect One- I thought your comment re" About a boy, was absolutely hilarious.

Perhaps he would draw you a picture of himself wearing the sweater? That way you'd know more of what he has in mind - ombre, arch, stripes, etc.
If his vision looks more like tie-dye, you might want to do something other than knitting or crocheting ;-)
I found a few links that might point you in various directions if you'd like to pm me, but I also think that wee12adopt's link is really cute!
Just get him a Tundra sweater.
Normally they are quite expensive but if you shop around you can find some reasonable prices for 2nd hand.

Here's a beautiful pattern for one ... It's only $1.98 .... The pattern should tell you the yarn weight and crochet hook size needed to achieve the end result.

Did he just see About A Boy?
What about a tie-dye sweatshirt?
Is he determined to have it be a sweater or would a soft sweatshirt do? If it would I would go to the craft store like michaels or hobby lobby and look for an iron on rainbow. and I don't think there is anything at all wrong with a rainbow on a boy. maybe you could even find kermit and make the picture from the movie.
Worsted weight variegated color - those are the terms you're looking for. Tons of free patterns on line.
