Race Car Bed

My son recently went to spend the night with his friend (also my next door neighbor). His friend Hunter has a race car bed and now my son badly wants one. The problem is when we bought his big boy bed we bought a brand new twin size bed with the storage drawers underneath. My son does have the room for one of these beds, but should we buy him one. He doesn't want for much, is a good helper around the house and yard. How much do these cost? Are they worth the money? How long do they last?

Thanks

What can I do next?

I would say just because a friend has something he likes and wants is no reason to buy it or you are teaching keeping up with everyone else. I would tell him his bed is fine, will grow with him, and maybe get him some sheets or comforter that is race car design. It's up to you though and nice that some on here is offering to sell you one for $50.00. I've seen so many toddler beds out in garages due to growing out them too soon and those things that are not practical down the road are a waste in my thinking. Teach him the value of what he has and not keeping up with everyone else.

Well, when my oldest was 2 he wanted a firetruck bed and I bought it for him....

It was around $ 260 (Step2)....

You have to consider that the mattress of most of these beds is only a crib size mattress, so the bed will only last as long as he is comfortable in this small space....

I ended up buying him a twin size bed 6 months later because he kept bumping his head at night and just wasn't happy anymore....

I second the bed tent idea! They have them in race car motives (http://www.amazon.com/Bazoongi-Kids-Race-Car-Tent/dp/B000.... 2 reasons - 1. You dont want to set a precedent of getting him things he sees his friends have (it only gets more expensive as they get older!) and 2. this would give him something more fun and unique (that his friends will go home and ask THEIR parents for!). Seriously - my roommate and I had a bed tents on our bunk beds in high school (went to boarding school) and we loved them - keeps the light out if someone else is up, and it keeps all the stuffed animals ON the bed! Get him a cool flashlight or camping lantern and I promise he will get way more use out of it than another bed that just looks cool but doesnt really do anything.

I would second (third?) the suggestion for a bed tent, or to get race car sheets, or a comforter. To go back to a toddler bed would be very impractical, and to buy a twin size race car bed isn't much more practical.

Seriously, just because he wants it.....doesn't mean that he has to have it! A perfect time for teaching Life Lessons.

A race car bed now.....every game system on the market at age 10.....& a new sports car when he's 16. How far do we take indulging our children's whims/needs/desires?

& let's not even start in with "keeping up with the Jones's"!

I wouldnt buy him a new bed - it's just a fad. But maybe letting him pick out some new fun sheets or something? I know when I was a kid, I was super excited when my mom let me pick out my own sheets. (probably why I still have my New Kids on the Block sheets..hee).

Sometimes these whims are short lived.... and anytime a friend has something they want it too... and the price tags on their whims can vary.
So you have to analyze that....
ALSO... a race car bed will not grow with the child... and sooner than you think... they will be on another age related phase and tastes.

All the best,
Susan

They fit the matress fromthe baby bed so you would also need to buy it unless you have one. They are for toddlers so depending on hoe tall he is it may not last long. I would keep the bed you have they seem to outgrow the toddler beds fast

My son had one of the toddler car beds and loved it! It was hard to get him to "move up" to a twin bed...but, when his feet started hanging over the mattress - we had to put our foot down! I guess it would depend on how old and tall he was, to determine if you would get your use out of it. I noticed someone offered for $50.00 - that's a great price - as I believed they retailed for between $150.00 and $200.00. BTW - my son still loves racecars to this day...6 years later - so, it wasn't a "phase" for him. ;)

I would think they would last as long as your son is interested in a race car bed. How old is he? Would he be okay with a race car fort, or something else if you feel the need to give him something?

Check craigslist for the bed. I have seen these beds on there many times and for pretty cheap. If you still have his crib mattress you'll be set.

My daughter only had her toddler bed for about a year before she outgrew it.

Since he already has a bed, how about a "bed tent" for a twin sized bed? They are cool and different from his friends, but it is still pretty neat.

Also for $20. makes more sense then switching to a toddler sized bed at this point..

I say, "Do it!" I think its okay to go out of the box sometimes and besides there will be an extra bed for sleepovers. Just wait and give it to him on his birthday, Christmas or something to the sort.

Hi Hopefully M,
I am unsure of how much they cost, but I was have seen several advertisements for Race Car beds on craiglist. If your son really wants one, maybe you do a swap for someone on Craiglist, your Captains' bed for a Race car bed-- they come in toddler bed and Twin bed size. Also, you may be able to get away with race car decor or bedding, to see if that calms your son down from actually wanting the race car bed.

You can buy these beds in twin size too so they last longer....we bought one off of Craigslist for 100.00 and it has held up very well! I would shop around and see if you can find a good deal and if you can I say go for it!!!

I think if you can afford it then it's no big deal to buy him one. Maybe call it an early birthday present or something.. I had one for my first son when he was little along with a regular twin bed and when he had friends over they each had a place to sleep. I was lucky enough to find the race car bed at a garage sale so that saved me some money. Maybe look on craigslist or in the paper and also place an ad in the "want" section of craigslist because you never know when someone might have one sitting around and they might see you ad and sell it to you cheap. Good luck! zoom zoom! lol

I think it would be really neat to get him race car sheets and beds and other bedroom decorations. He might really like them. I know my son is a sucker for sheets and other character/animal/race car things.

My son has the red race car bed, my sis bought for him $250. It fits a twin mattress. It is a pain to change sheets as the matress sits in the car you have to pull the mattress up and over the rim. There is also no box spring just the matress laying on the plastic bottom, which is ok till your kid gets too heavy. My son is 7 now has had it for almost 5 years and I hope to get a couple of more years out of it. I am dreading the day we have to move it out of his room. It is really heavy and cumbersome and has to be disassembled to get out of his room. I guess I am saying you have a bed already find something else to snazz it up.

I'm kinda late chiming in here, but I bought my son a race car bed. I have no complaints what so ever. He loves it! It has the option of using a crib mattress or a twin sized mattress, which is the kind I would recommend. I believe it will last until he's too old (pre-teen?) or embarrassed. :)
Three years ago, it cost $250.
The one thing I wish for is to store things under the bed...it's not a real biggie for us, but consider your space and how much those drawers on the bed you already bought will matter.
