How about an engraved business card holder. You can get it engraved at Simply Remembered or similar store. Shouldn't cost too much. GL
In my haste to get my 2 year old sons birthday party planned and set up. I forgot we were invited to a close friends party. He passed the Bar, and is being sworn in today, so I want to get him a gift, but not sure what is appropriate for such short notice. He likes alcohol but is that a very appropriate gift? I am limited on time and ability to leave the house. Is money in a card something for only younger people? This guy is in his 30's and it happens to be his birthday as well this weekend. OI
Love the engraving idea but this party is tomorrow and i can get out for more than an hour :(

Alcohol is fine as long as you know what he drinks. A tie would also be good, a funny one if you can find one that suits his personality and the 'funny' part would be hidden by a sports coat. Money clip with a set of business cards (you can print your own). Cash is also good but I would at least add something personal to it, like his favorite candy.
For a lawyer the best options are things they can use in their work but that last forever and when used, they will think of the giver. Think client meetings: leather portfolio (folder) they make them in various levels of quality. Not sure how much you want to spend but a basic leather one is about $25, a more elaborate one (outside pocket, calculator inside, etc) can be $40-$75. If you want to spend about $100 a Mont Blanc pen (or other pricey pen) is a nice gift that you'd never buy for yourself but a lawyer would use. (Think of him saying: "please sign here, and here, and here...."). Depending on the kind of law he'll be practicing and his office environment, a classy desk or shelf clock is nice. Walnut or brass, simple lines, quiet. A nice desk set is an option (pen cup, card holder, blotter, etc.) although it can be overkill if he doesn't have a nice office.
All of these things can be bought at Staples office supply store.
Being a professional I can tell you NOT to get the business card holder (the kind that goes in your pocket). I've gotten a few as gifts over the years and they take up too much space in your pocket or bag. Once it's engraved you can't even give it away. All leather portfolios have a pocket for business cards. One that stands on the desk isn't a bad idea - but I've never used one - i keep my spares in my desk.
Personally I'd skip the alcohol too. Once it's gone it's gone. Unless you were to spend a huge amount of money and buy a very rare bottle of something it's just a bottle of booze.
The restaurant gift certificate isn't the worst idea but it's another one of those things that gone once it's gone. I prefer to give gifts that mark a memory and the person will always think of you when they use it.
Enjoy and have fun!
I never give alcohol to commemorate an important life milestone. Just me.
A congrats card and then a trip to a store that engraves things. There will be lots of nice options: pens, business card holders, there are lots of choices there.
I think alcohol and/or cash is just fine along with a card. Depends on what he's into too, but a nice pen or a gift card to a men's clothing storey, or a nice tie wrapped around a bottle of scotch!
*Gift card to a nice restaurant....one that isn't a chain. ??
Kid is crying...gotta go!
I would get him a nice bottle of champagne. That is totally appropriate given his age and his graduation from law school/birthday.
