Questions to Ask Babysitter?

Can you give me some ideas of what questions to ask babysitters?

I have a nanny, and I gave detailed interviews and background checks for that, but this would just be for occasional babysitting, a few hours at a time.

Some of the possible sitters are girls from our church who have been referred to me by other moms; another is a girl I met when she was nannying part time.

I guess I'm wondering if my interview should be as detailed as for a nanny, or should I just focus on whether the kids get along with her?

Finally, do you do any kind of background check for sitters (not full time nannies)? Do you get copies of their driver's license, etc, just in case? I don't think my parents ever did that when getting sitters for me, but I think people were more trusting back then.

Also- what is a reasonable rate? We paid around $10 when I just had one, but now I have two- a 3 year old and a baby- does the rate double for 2 kids? (We live in Southern California).

Thanks so much!

I would think that if the possible sitters are girls from your church, they are somewhat known quanitites. Even if you do not know these girls personally, someone in your church probably does and can probably vouch for the type of character they have and how responsible they are. As such, I doubt that an extensive interview and background check would be necessary. I think that just seeing how they are with the kids and what kind of vibe you get from her can really tell you a lot.

When I babysat when I was younger, nobody ever interviewed me or asked for my background information. Of course, I did talk to the parents and they did ask me stuff about what I've been up to and how's school's going, so that's probably their way of sizing me up. With my own babysitters, I've pretty much have done the same thing. All of our babysitters have been fantastic. I'm sure your's will be too.

I would ask her what she would do in specific situations, emergency and non-emergency situations. That will give you a good idea of how quickly she thinks and acts, and it gives you the opportunity to tell her what you do with your children in certain situations. B.

you mentioned your church contacts.
This probably means you know the moms. If
you have a sitter and you know her mom is also
near by as back up this should work out if you
like the girl and the kids like her. There is no
perfect way to check someone out.

In my opinion, I think you should get some phone numbers of people she has babysat for. Maybe 3 or 4 . Call them and see what they say. You can't trust anyone these days. I had one girl come over with her laptop and I told her...you are here to watch my baby and you bring that? Nooo way...
When you find a good one, you will know. Get a copy of her license..it will keep her on guard.

If the girls are coming recommended from church, you already have a reference. I would ask them for basic information, how long have you been babysitting, have you had any formal training, etc. You may also want to ask them about school, what activities they're involved in. I would also have her play for awhile with the 3 year old to make sure they get along well.

IMO $10, is more than enough for 2 kids, of course rates vary by area.
