My son is almost 14 months, but 12 adjusted; he was 6 weeks early. I'm just curious about a few things from other moms who've been there.
My son babbles a lot; makes tons of sounds, but I've noticed that he really doesn't make them to anyone specifically. He pretty much babbles to himself a lot and doesn't really make babble sounds to get my attention.
He points to everything, which is great. He doesn't look where I point, though. He sometimes will, but for the most part he will not.
He's understanding more and more. If I say "let's go change your diaper" he goes to his room and will get his ball when asked. He doesn't have any true words, yet.
He likes to clap and play "hide and seek" and dance to music, but doesn't really care to wave.
So, normal/common for him not to be doing some of the things I've listed for his age?

He sounds absolutely, completely normal and fine. He just sounds like he has great receptive language (i.e., comprehension) and is waiting until he's more "ready" to try vocalizing words. Some babies are like that -- it's fine. Could even be a lifelong personality trait -- he could wind up being the type of person who listens and takes everything in before jumping headlong into things. But he sounds absolutely on target for his age.
If you get the book What to Expect the Toddler Years there will be a chapter for each month outlining what the average child does at that month., of course reminding us that there is a wide range of average. It is fun to read about! He sounds advanced for a 14 month old :)
He sounds fine, actually. Next time you see your pediatrician, ask about everything you've noted, just to be sure.

Sounds pretty normal to me.
It's been a while, but that sounds very normal to me. My son didn't start really talking until around 20 months, and I actually got him speech therapy at 2 because he seemed so far behind. He turned 8 yesterday and I can't get him to stop talking! And he is extremely articulate and well spoken, reading two grade levels ahead, and smart as a whip. So it sounds like he is very on track, based on my own limited experience (two kids total).

I think your son sounds completely normal for a 12-14 month old! My son is 15 months and only recently started pointing (hubby and I rarely point), but now he's old enough to understand that I'm pointing at something. My son has favorite words that he just likes saying, he's not saying them to anyone. Everything you explained sounds developmentally on track :)
I know it's hard, but try not to worry too much. Every child develops so differently! A couple friends of mine had babies on the exact same day. One walked at 10 months, the other at 13 months. One barely says boo, but the other babbles up a storm. I just live my life with my son and before a regular doctor's check-up I start paying attention more to what exactly he's doing.
Hi LMB, I had a 26 week, 1lb 11oz preemie boy (he's off to college in September!). I had so many questions. Also he was my second child, I was always comparing (big mistake!).
Your fella sounds about right to me as far as I remember, but share your questions with your ped, and I had my little guy evaluated by an OT, recommended by our NICU every few months until about 3 yo. That made me feel a little better too.
