Hi Cia my daughter watches that everyday and I watch it with her and I have never heard them say any bad language.
I was wondering if anyone out there knows alot about the backyardigans? My five yo came out with "oh for chrissake!" in proper context. This is not something we say and I have asked around to the other mom's whose kids he hangs around if hey say this. All no's. I asked him where he heard it and he said the yellow girl on the backyardigans says it. Is this true?? I have been watching it since he told me but have yet to hear her say it. Also, he has no reason to make it up because he is allowed to use pretty much any language he chooses. I am not angry that he said it but I am aware that other parents don't feel the same way about "bad" words.
Tell me I am wrong, please, so I don't have to crusade against the backyardigans.
Thanks for letting me know that they don't say things like that. As a side note, My son is allowed to use any words he wants in our house. This is one of the smartest moves i have ever made, he knows what words are ok to say at school and what words are ok for at home. He also thinks potty words are not funny because I have taken the joy out of saying things that get other kids in trouble or attention from their parents (by simply never responding in a big way). My mom always said if you ignore it they will stop.
Tahnks for all your responses. I understand they don't say that on the backyardigans.
Hi Cia my daughter watches that everyday and I watch it with her and I have never heard them say any bad language.
I have watched this show one too many times with my son and have never heard this or experiences anything inappropriate. I don't believe they would make a cartoon for toddlers with anything inappropriate b/c they would have so many letters, complaints, etc not to mention fanatics trying to sue!
Cia,
I have a 4 year old and a 14 mo. old who both watch the Backyardigans regularly. I must say that my baby seems to enjoy it more than the 4 year old due to the amount of singing. I haven't heard them repeating anything like that as of yet, but I am going to be on the alert. Thanks for the heads up!

I have never heard this on the Backyardigans and have watched it with my kids daily forever. I doubt he was being dishonest, probably just can't remember where he heard it.
I am sorry to say that I think I have heard them say that on that show. My daughter watches it every once in awhile and I am almost certain I heard that expression on there. Some of these shows slide little sayings in there.
Sorry to deliver this news to you but now you know where he heard it and kudos to your son for being such a honest little guy!
Hi Cia!
I dont know if a crusade is nescassary , but I think it is very important that you caught that , and a phone call or an email pointing out your concerns is always a very good Idea.
Its very important to teach your children early that what is on the TV is not always tru at such a young age children can and do learn Ideaologies that are not yours! I remember watching a Halloween cartoon special on tv when my children were 4 and 5 and at the begining of the cartoon a childs voice was explaining in detail what the most important day of the year is...The voice said and I quote," The most important day of the year is not Christmas, its not Easter, its not the new year..No! The most important time of the year is halloween! with an explosion of exciting music at the end"
It would be a good opportunity for you to talk about what the children see and it would be ideal if the children would actually come to you when they hear or learn something on tv and asked you about the truth of it and or the worthiness of the subject and or the material.I have a huge problem with the desensitation that the liberals are trying to install in our children. Hope this helps!

what's wrong with saying "oh for christ-sake?" Please tell me your not one of those parents who gets everything fun for kids & teens taken off t.v. for no reason? (step away from the back-yardiens)lol.
you know kids are like parrots, repeat everything they hear!

Cia,
What an open family you are. We too watch backyardigans...one of Robbie's favorites, and I personally think it's a wonderful show, full of imagination. Thanks for questioning it on here before just assuming they were saying not so great things and bashing it. It is, as others have stated, "oh for goodness sakes". It's so hard to find quality, moral television as we've had to stop our "parrot" from watching shows that use the word "stupid" (everything was stupid for a while), and other questionable things.
Good luck.

I too have never heard anything of the sort on Backyardigans, and we have it on in our house a few times per week.
I watch the backyardigans with my 2 year old everyday, and the yellow hippo says "Oh for goodness sakes." The FCC would have a field day with Nick for something like that. don't worry about it, it could have just been misinturpreted. I think all kids do that sometimes.
I watch The Backyardagians everyday with my son and i have never noticed it on there. now south park on the other hand says it often!
My son watches the backyardigans everyday and I have never one time heard them talk like that......maybe he got them confused? or maybe he heard it just out in public, most people dont watch their language out in places like the grocery store or the mall, etc.
My daughter also watches bacyardigans and ihave never heard any improper language used on the show. oep that helps.
I just have to say that I think the Backyardigans is one of the cutest shows on telvision for kids, and there is absolutely no way that your child heard any profanity from that show. I'm sure you'll probably never find out exactly where he heard this phrase being used because he probably doesn't even remember where he heard it. I heard my husband use the f-word the other day in the store, and went ballistic on him. My point is, he could have heard it anywhere, except for on the Backyardigans.
I watch the Backyardigans at least 2 times a day with my 3 and 1 yr olds and have Never heard anything like that. He could have picked it up anywhere.
We watch multiple episodes of the Backyardigans a day (thanks to Tivo) and I have never heard any bad words on the show. I am in the room while my daughter watches it and have never heard that phrase. I wouldn't think a Nickjr show would have language like that in it.
Cia--
I have watched the Backyardigans several times with my kids and never have heard that type of language and wouldn't think that it would have been in that show, given the type of show it is and the age group it is aimed at. That is not to say it 'couldn't' have been on the show, but I haven't seen it.
Sometimes the kids think they heard the word and say it like they heard it, but the actual word wasn't the one they thought they heard.
Just so you know, if my child said that it would upset me ALOT, so you know my radar would have picked up on it if it was there.
best thing to do is explain that some things you dont say in front of others because they will not like it. he's at the age were he can begin to understand what others charicterize as bad words or just simply dont let him watch that program anymore
I have never heard that type pf language on the Backyardigans . My daughter is a faithful watcher .
Hope you find out the root of the word.

Hi Cia:
I looked up this program on Wikipedia.com and on IMDB and in both places it says basically the same thing. "Tasha
A playful and authoritative yellow hippo, and Uniqua's best friend. Very feminine and classy most of the time, but her attitude sometimes causes her to act bossy and try to make the others act the way she wants them to. Choreographer Bogush describes her as 'absolutely full of herself all the time. She's the know-it-all. 'But she is as tough as she is fun and good-humored. Tasha often uses the expression, "Oh, for goodness sakes!" and all they hate it to behave as I replace of Austin, Austin is better than she"
I don't know if this helps you or not, but I highly doubt that in a children's program that is rated TV-Y that means All Children.
"This program is designed to be appropriate for all children. Whether animated or live action, the themes and elements in this program are specifically designed for a very young audience, including children from ages 2-6. This program is not expected to frighten younger children." ~www.parentstv.org.
I hope this is of some assistance to you.
Have a wonderful Holiday Weekend. It is more likely that your son has picked it up from another friend who hears the parents saying it. A lot of times we, as parents, don't realize that sometimes things come out of our mouths that little ones will interpret in their own little way. Let him know that you do not like him using that phrase (if that is the case) and praise him when he uses an alternative phrase.
I watch the Backyardigans every once in a while, but I seriously doubt the characters have said something like that. It is very geared towards younger children and I haven't heard ANYTHING of that sort from the show. IDK where your son heard it, but I doubt from the show. Good luck!
I don't recall any of them saying that either, they only thing I can recall them say is "Oh for goodness sakes". My children actually just got done watching that show not that long ago.
My four year old watches it all hte time and I have never heard a bad word in it. I am in the room every time he watches it. So maybe he didn't hear it there. Just check it again.
He's just testing his limits. He knows that what he sad is questionable and so he blamed where he heard it on something benign. I wouldn't worry about the Backyardigans. We watch them here and I've never heard anything bad on there. Don't worry, but do try to chat him up about what language is acceptable. On a funny little side note, my 3 year old told me to "go block yourself" the other day. It did NOT sound like block, however. She had no context to it and I had no idea what she meant-she babbles on and on throughtout the whole day. I thought it was horrifyingly funny!
Good luck!
My Mother in Law watches my little guy a couple days a week and she loves this show (I'm pretty sure she likes it more than my son). In any event, she's assured me that there is no way there is any questionable language on the show and she's pretty confident she's seen every episode since they don't make many. Could your son have been watching the show when maybe a radio was playing nearby and he thought he heard it on the show? Just a thought...
My 3 year old watches backyardigans all the time. I have not heard any bad language on it yet...but I will keep looking out for it.
My kids watch the BackYardigans. The yellow hippo, Tasha, is very bossy and sometimes says things that I don't feel are useful for teaching the kids appropriate social interaction, but I've NEVER heard her say something like that. Your son may be getting cartoons confused.
K. E.
Hello. I can't say where your said heard that language, but I'm
100 percent sure its not from the backyardigans. My four year old watches it every day, and I watch it with him and they have never ever said anything like that. They are one of the shows that is safe to watch for little ones. I watch everything my son does just to keep an eye on what he is viewing and the backyardigans are really safe. I do know in one episode the yellow one, tosha, said, "oh for goodness sake."
Hope this helps.
