I would consider taking a pregnancy test. I couldn't hurt.
After my son was born (10 months ago) I choose an IUD for birth control. Since having it my periods have been exactly the same every month. Normally I spot for two to three days before my period actually starts and then once it starts it lasts for five days, I then spot for another two to three days. This whole process starts right around the 12th day of the month. This month I spotted for the normal two to three days and then nothing. I am now five days late for my actual period. I thought I read somewhere (back when I was researching the IUD) that IUDs are suppose to stop your periods in time. Does anyone know if this is true or maybe had a similar experience with the IUD. I am freaking out thinking I might be pregnant as I am not sure that I want a baby right now, acouple of years from now sure, but not now. I have also been under an extreme amount of stress for the last few months and am wondering if that could have an affect on my time of the month scedule as well. I have a doc appt this week, but was just wondering if anyone might have any insight.
Thanks to everyone who responded!! I did contact my doctor (yesterday) and the IUD is still in place and I am not pregnant. However I did learn that the IUD can affect a womens period as early as six months (I thought it took much longer). She said I should expect to see a very short very light period from here on out. Thanks again to everyone.

The question about the IUD...Is it the kind that has homones in it? I thought about getting the IUD but I'm still stuck. I'm 35 and have three kids (ages 13, 10, 4 months); we're not using any form of birth control nor we are not ready for another child. I don't want anything permanent yet, but I wouldn't mind if my husband would think about it.
I have had an IUD for about 2 yrs now. After about 6mo or maybe more, I started seeing the days of my period reduce. Now I'm at spotting for one day and then one day of normal light period. It's great!!! When I first got it, my periods were completly abnormal, long and spotting almost all the time it seemed. After awhile, my body adjusted. Hopefully that's what you're body is doing now. But, if you're still worried, a pregnancy test can't hurt, right.
Hi M.,
I had an IUD for ten years and had very regular periods like you are describing, though I never experienced a "long" month where I thought that I could actually be pregnant...at least not that I recall, and I continued to have my periods.
After having the first IUD replaced, my cycles were all messed up for nearly two years until finally I simply had it removed.
If you think you may be pregnant take a test, and make an appointment with your gyno. The failure rate for IUDs is small (compared to other methods), unfortunately there's also an increased chance of ectopic pregnancy, commonly in a fallopian tube.
Talk with your doctor.
Hello, I opted for an IUD after the birth of my daughter, 4 months ago, and since I've gotten it, I've noticed my periods have become less intense and shorter. As long as your checking every month after each period for the string, and you can feel it, I really don't think you have anything to worry about, but if you think in any way that you are pregnant, you should take a test to be sure, because you'll want to have your IUD removed as soon as possible.
I would buy an over the counter pregnancy test and then follow up with your doctor no matter what the result is.
