Were you wearing liners? Sometimes they drop and rub a lovely blister. I would try changing liners/socks first and see if that helps. Running is a different motion than walking, it can shift the socks where running did not.
I resumed walking yesterday, using my running shoes that have never before giving me a blister. I walked a few miles and developed 1 large blister on the back of my foot, above the heel.
Do you think I need to get new shoes? Or any other hints/tips for treating and preventing it? I intend to walk about 5 miles a day, so I really need to get the blister situation under control. The shoes I have I got at a running store 1 1/2 yrs ago, but they honestly haven't gotten THAT much use--certainly not enough for me to think they have outlived their useful lives.
Aha, the shin splints just started tonight too. Y'all are right--time for new shoes, and this time around I will get proper moisture-wicking socks. No more cotton crew socks for this chick.

I trained for a really long walk once, and feared the blister. I think you do need some new shoes for sure. Go somewhere to get fitted and really try a few on. I was amazed at how little I thought about footware and how comfortable they can be before I started training. Anti chafing or glide stick is a great idea. Also, think about what socks you are wearing, if they are too thick, they could be affecting how your shoe fits. You might want to get thinner socks that wick away moisture.
If you are so inclined and don't mind a little bit of mess, vaseline also helps quite a bit with blisters. I got used to the slimey feeling pretty quickly, and I have to say I really didn't get any blisters the whole time I trained, and during the walk.
So sock fit, shoe fit, and grease them puppies up! I love walking and we shouldn't be feeling pain! Good luck.

Blisters can be prevented by using an anti chafing balm like lanacaine or glide stick both can be found either in the pharmacy or a sporting good store.
If you are intent on continuing your workouts, you can cover the blister with duct tape. It will prevent further chafing and will stick better than most bandages do.
Speak with seasoned runners they'll have a bunch of tricks of the trade for you.
good luck to you and yours,

Your shoes don't fit properly and that is the problem. Sorry to say, you need new shoes.
I think you need new shoes. Even though shoes don't look old, the insides can break down. If they used to fit fine and you're just now having this problem, then you probably need new ones. I also notice when my shoes need replacement, I get shin splints. You may have been moving your feet or adjusting your stride (even subconsciously) due to the added impact you feel when your shoes start to break down. I'd go to a good running store and have them professionally fit you for new shoes. Happy walking!
