Hello Everyone,

My little girl (age 3) has been getting mild colds all summer. This is unusual for her. She usually got 1-3 colds per winter. Last spring she got strep throat and was put on antibiotics for the first time. My friends little girl hardly ever catches cold or gets sick....when she does catch cold it is usually a runny nose which is done in a day or two. I asked my friend her secret. She said that she takes her daughter (and their whole family) to a naturopath. I thought it sounded interesting so I took my little girl to see him too. He felt her back and told me he thought that when she was put on antibiotics that the antibiotics killed the strep but also killed some of the good bacteria that lives in her intestine and she had an overgrowth of yeast in her intestines. He prescribed lactic acid yeast tablets for her. (1/2 a tablet twice a day). He also adjusted her back and suggested that we cut out as much wheat and dairy for 3 weeks as possible. I gave her the tablets as prescribed but wasn't as strict as I should have been with her diet. She isn't a big sweet eater but she does like pasta. About 2 days before her 3 wk follow up appt. she had really stinky poop which was almost diarhea. She complained that her tummy hurt and that her bottom hurt. I took her to see the naturopath (for her follow up appt.) and told him about her bowel movements. He said that is the bad stuff being released thru her system and that since I hadn't been as careful with her diet as I could have been that it took the lactic acid yeast a little longer to work on her system. He felt her back and chest and tummy again and said everything felt good but to keep her on the lactic acid yeast tablets (1/2 a tablet twice a day) for 2 more weeks and then she should have all of the yucky stuff out of her system. Today once again she had a really soft (almost diarhea) bowel movement and complained (mildly) of a tummy ache. I am very new to naturopathy and I am wondering if anyone else has heard of this type of treatment for a 3 year old. Any input appreciated!

T. - I am surprised that the "dr" just felt her back and was able to "feel" yeast and "feel" that good bacteria was missing. He must be a magician.
THat seems like a crock.
One of my sons gets sick a lot, and one of them rarely gets sick. While I am not a fan of antibotics, sometimes they are a necessity. 3 years old and runny diarhea does not sound like fun, and it's HURTING her. I would stop if I were you.
Put her on the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) and try and get her belly to calm down.
If she is in daycare, church daycare, around kids at play areas, moms groups..ect., she is going to be exposed to all kinds of germs. She'll get sick. She is only 3, so it's still kind of early (I think) to say that things are usual or unusual.
Good Luck to you, and I hope your daughter's belly starts to feel better.

The chiropractor sounds like he was also using some cranio sacral therapy on your little girl. It is not a crock! I've taken my daughter since she was quite young...2 1/2 months (she was 7 weeks early). With training, you can definitely feel imbalances in the body. My daughter uses naturopathic meds, and I follow the guidelines. Would you have doubted your pediatrician if they said limit wheat? Isn't worth a try if the simple solution to this problems DOESN'T involve pharmaceuticals, just continued yeast (natural) and no/limited wheat intake? If you are looking for a naturopath cheerleader...Hooray for you! Stick with it and you'll be amazed what the human body can do without interference from man made chemicals. Your daughter's body and growth will thank you in the future.
