I have had my mirena iud for just over 2.5 years (since my daughter was born) and LOVE it but have recently experienced something that has me a little worried. A little back story when i got the iud i was still married and as we were on the downward slide in our relationship we did not have sex much (we are talking maybe once or twice a month MAYBE 10 min total each time). Since having my Mirena i have not had any sign of a period at all, no cramping, pms, not even a tinted discharge. Fast forward a little. We seperated and i went an entire year without sex at all while i focused on my children and that major change in our lives. Well ex husband and i have been divorced since the beginning of this year and about 2 months ago i started seeing someone new. About a month ago we started sleeping together and just this weekend i started having some spotting, nothing major just a spot here and there. At first i didnt really think anything of it other than you know thats kinda strange since i have had nothing since getting the iud so long ago. Now i am started to get a little concerned that pregnancy could be a possibility (I am very fertile, my second child was conceived using birth control, condoms, and i was still breastfeeding my oldest and had not even had a period yet), or if it could just be hormonal changes brought on by the feelings with this new amazing man in my life. Just wanted to get some experience from other women who use mirena on if they have ever experienced this and if they determined what was causeing the sudden change?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice ladies. I felt more confident that pregnancy was very unlikely after reading the responses and experience of other mirena users. I did buy a test anyways just for my own peace of mind and it was of course negative so i feel much better now.

I havent experienced it, but maybe it is just because you hadnt had sex in a long time. If you are concerned about a possible pregnancy take a test. I dont get periods with my mirena either and my OB had suggested taking a test every few months just as a precaution. Good luck and Congrats to your new relationship!

I hate BC lol its so unpredictable i went a year of non stop periods when i got on BC then the 2nd year hardly had one at all and now im in the 3rd year and close to getting it out and they are back to normal. It could be just hormonal or something to do with going without sex for a little while? I would take a test to be sure and maybe even go to your Dr to be sure. Good luck

I had the copper iud for 2 yrs and had it removed b/c i was having problems. do u check your strings? the mirena has hormones in it so it can make your cycle whacky and i've heard from several friends that there periods got really lite when they were on it. when i had my iud in i would spot sometimes after sex, i was never preggers.

My period was crazy when I was on Mirena. Some months I'd have an annoying light period for 3 straight weeks.

I will get some spotting then I will go a while with nothing. This may be tmi, but if my husband goes a little too hard or deep I will get some spotting. Call your OB and get an exam just to amke sure everything is in place and that you aren't pregnant as the Mirena as you know could hinder that. Good Luck!
