Question for Breastfeeding Moms

I stopped breastfeeding about a month and a half ago and since then haven't had a period. Prior to this I did have a period on a regular basis. I also breastfed my daughter and never missed a period when I stopped breastfeeding. I took a test to see if I might be pregnant. I don't know if this is perhaps a side effect and don't want to take another test to see if I might be pregnant for a little while. Anyone else had a similiar experience like this? This would be my fifth pregnancy if it is but I have never had a negative test when I suspected being pregnant.

What can I do next?

I thought it was normal not to have your period while breast feeding. Usually your period resumes when you stop breast feeding. Of course your period is not very regular until a few months after breast feeding. Don't worry about it for a little while yet.

From what I understand this is normal. Ask your doctor and don't stop until you are satisfied with the answer.

J.,
Yes this happened to me and I was afraid that I was preg. I didn't want to be at the time. I asked the dr and he said that it is normal to not be regular after breast feeding although I was with the others after breast feeding. He told me not to worry about it that it would eventually straighten itself out. He said what causes it was different things like your age, how many kids you have had, hormones (hormones are going to be different with different ages and times), whether I am in a relaxed environment, my body, the things that I am eating,.... he said that there were so many different things that could cause it that there would be no way that he could list it all. But the main point is that he said it could last 1 month to 2 yrs. Well it lasted about 6 or 7 months and then I straightened out. Now i am like clock work, so I guess he knew what he was talking about. If you know you are not preg for sure, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The only problem that I had is that I didn't want to talk the pill right away and without being regular, I couldn't hit my ovulating date on time and I felt nervous alot for that reason which was one of the reasons that he mentioned (stress).
I hope this helps.

J.,

I started weaning our daughter the first week in August and am down to just a bedtime, nighttime and morning feeding. I was like clockwork before I got pregnant even when I got off the pill to try for the pregnancy, however, I had one light period since her birth and have not had a period since. I was told it was normal and should eventually return when my hormones return to normal. My daughter is now 11 mos old and I will be 40 at the end of the month to let you know where I stand there.

I stopped breastfeeding 8 weeks ago and have still not had resumption of my menstrual cycle. I too was very regular. My doctor says it can take up to 4 months for your cycles to return to normal. I do have some cramping on occasion but no sign of the beloved friend yet, actually I guess I should not complain about that. Good luck.
