Question About Taking Progesterone

Hi, Moms.

I'm 42 years old and recently my husband and I decided on trying for another baby. I stopped taking the pill in August and got my period. However, I have not had a period since then. My period has never been that regular and cycles are longer than average, but I've never been this late.

After urine and blood tests to make sure I wasn't pregnant, my doctor prescribed progesterone for me in order to "jump start" and regulate my period. I'm hoping the progesterone works and that I'm not experiencing early menopause.

I have two questions about this.

1) Have you skipped your period after you went off the pill? And how/when did it come back?

2) If you've taken progesterone, did it help regulate your period?

Thank you for any help!

- Lily

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your response! It was reassuring to hear from others who have gone through the same thing. I had never thought about using acupuncture and herbs, but I think it's a great suggestion and will look into that now.

I don't know about the Progesterone but even though I had regular periods prior to going on the pill at one point when I went off the pill for a while I went 2 months between periods (I was a teenager and it freaked me out), I went to my obgyn and everything was fine it was just a matter of having quit the birth control.

Hi LT

I can share some high quality herbal/nutraceutical products that are formulated to bring the body back into balance. I have been taking them for 10 years and I have had awesome results with them!

The first one is called Female Balance. It is an herbal formula that provides phyto estrogens and addresses any hormonal issue that you can think of. The product that addresses the progesterone needs is called Bio Infinity. That one has Pregnenolone in it that tells your body to make it's own DHEA which then helps your body to produce the hormones that it needs. Omega III fatty acids are also very important for hormonal balance. And a nutritional drink called Genesis helps with hormones also. You can check these products out on my website at www.symmetrydirect.com/dhendon. Please call me if you have any questions. There is so much we can do for our health needs in with high quality effective products like these.

Hi LT,
As so many times before when talking about fertility I am going to suggest hypnosis. Hypnosis is a marvelous tool only limited by your needs and the imagination of the operator. You might be interested in HypnoFertility. You can look it up on line and locate a HypnoFertility Therapist. Do yourself a favor and make sure the HypnoFertility Therapist is trained and certified preferably by Lynsi Eastburn, the creator of the program.
Best of luck, S.
p.s. as you might have guessed I am certified and trained by Lynsi.

The pill creates an totally 'artificial balance' in the system and now your body is imbalanced. It may not snap back right after you've been on the pill. At 42 your body is also going into changes. Double Whammy! Progesterone is one suggestion. Also, Acupuncture and herbs could assist greatly in getting your system naturally back into baby making shape. There is no time to lose. J.

Hi Lily,

At 42 it's not enough to have a period, the quality of your eggs has deteriorated and nature is scraping the bottom of the barrel. My husband had this idiotic notion that women are fertile well into their 40s postpoing our family making until I was 43. After $30K of infertility treatments he finally figured out he was wrong and we adopted. If you're not ready to go to fertility drugs, I highly recommend accupuncture - it's very good at regulating periods.

Good luck,

P.

Hi: I went for about 9 months without a period. I started on NATURAL progesterone and within 2 months I was having my period again. From what I understand, most doctors prescribe progestin, which is not natural. You can go to my website http://www.Women4Balance.com/MichelleJ and look at the first testimonial, which talks about regulating periods with natural progesterone and pregnancy. You can also sign up with our yahoo group and read articles and/or ask questions - http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/HormoneHealthNW/ .

I hope this helps.

My situation is not exactly like yours but I thought I would chime in briefly...I was on the pill for years in my late teens and early twenties (in part becasue of irregular periods -- often only getting a period ever few months). For many reasons I chose to stop taking the pill and it was the best decision I ever could have made. But once I stopped taking them I discovered I still had very irregular periods. I started using a natural progesterone cream (applied to the soft spots on my wrists twice daily) that I got at my local health food store. My periods became regular...it was amazing. I used it for years in my twenties and was extremly pleased with the results. Then I started having kids and some how my body has reverted to more regular periods (I now get a period every 5-6 weeks)with out using any hormones (pill, progesterone, etc).

On another note, I have always been told by my obgyns (both homeopathic and conventional western docs) that as long as you are getting at least 3-4 periods a year there is nothing to worry about re fertility. I'm not sure if that is true as you get older but that is what I've been told and in my experiance it has been true.

I wish you the best of luck....M

Your situation is me in a nutshell. I was irregular for a year after coming off the pill. My OB said that was just the way my cycles really fell, they were just being masked by the regulation of the pill. They eventually (about a year) started becoming regular. After I stopped breastfeeding (never had a period during this time) around 13 months we wanted to start trying again. Irregular periods again and during on month I was prescribed progesterone. My period started in 3 days. The next 3 cycles were like clock work and then after that my cycles shifted around a bit but were all within a reasonable ball park. I haven't had to take it again and it certainly didn't seem to do any harm. I do think I did do some re-regulating after, but they're irregular anyway...nothing new! Currently things are pretty predictable, I think I just have a slow to change system. I've heard positive stories from acupuncture though and would do that next time if needed. Good luck.

I had to take progesterone for another reason so all I can say is it helped my situation only to have my body do what it needed to do anyway...

But I wanted to give another idea that I think is more effective having studied quite a bit about fertility. I would recommend an acupuncturist and Chinese herbs over progesterone (although she might suggest that as part of the treatment) to start and regulate your cycle. There are a number of acupuncturists who specialize in fertility. Check out the studies...

Hi,
I actually just finished my prescription of progestrone. I didnt recieve my period for 6 months, it just stopped. Tried everything(herbs, acupuncture), becuase I didnt want medication. But had to take it, I took it for 15 days and 2 days after i finally started my period. So it ended up working for me. BUT... just a warning, doesnt make you feel very good. I felt really nasua, tired, emotional, and I gained weight. So just be prepared for that. One good part is once its over all that goes away quickley.Good Luck, unfortunatley it was the one thing that worked.

Hi L T.

I am becoming more and more suspicious about doctors' advice. They are trained to deal with sickness and pharmaceuticals to alleviate the symptoms instead of educating people on how to determine where the issues are coming from and improving your functioning at the source. I work for a health and wellness company, Isagenix International, that provides organic superfoods and a cleansing technology so your body can heal itself and perform as God meant it to. (My web site is mxbestlife.isagenix.com)

I have a variety of questionnaires that I go through with my clients to help them evaluate where their deficiencies could be coming from. My biggest questions for you would be:
1.) What are your habits? eating, drinking, sleeping, exercising, stress. All of these effect your tissues and organs.

Check out this video that informs you about Isagenix. If it sounds interesting to you, I would be happy to do a Health and Wellness review with you. I also have a book written specifically about healthy mothers, during and after pregnancy. It discusses and recommends action to optimize your experience.

http://www.isagenix.com/us/en/healthtv.dhtml

(Please note this can be used as a weight loss product. I did not start using these products for this reason. Olympic athletes and people just wanting to improve their overall health are amazed by their results, just as much as people interested in losing weight.)

Dr. Becky Natrajan (female doctor in the video) is going to be in Burlingame next Saturday, 10/18. I would love to have you as my guest if you would like to come and hear the experts for yourself.

I hope that your find the answers your looking for to obtain your goals!
M. Xavier
