Hey there, two weeks ago my daughter was knocked around in a soccer game and hurt her lower back. She was treating it with advil/heat/stretching/ice and sitting out sports for two weeks (she plays soccer, softball and basketball right now). Anyway she finally played soccer again yesterday and the kicking motion flared up the pain in her back again. Two people suggested they've had luck with chiropractors that have experience with sport related injuries. Anyone here have any advice? My husband is against it. I am looking for anyway to get her back to feeling ok. Help! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My whole family goes monthly if not more often. It's affordable healthcare and because of this we are rarely ill and my two very athletic kids are pain free and doing what they do best. My youngest 2 have been getting adjusted since birth and are 17 months and 3 months old.

My husband is both a sports medicine doctor and a chiro. A LOT of athletes see chiros because it is so beneficial. It more than likely will help. You don't say how old your daughter is. If she is young you probably want to look for a chiro who specializes in pediatrics.

As a registered nurse, I too was like your husband for many years! But then, I finally found relief by going to a chiropractor that no one else could give me. All I was given before were pain pills and muscle relaxers. Now I'm a firm believer and understand the difference and will call my chiro first.

There is nothing wrong with seeing one. If your daughter is young find one that works with children. If you see one make sure they take x-rays and/or an MRI to rule out any breaks. They should also not do an adjustment until they see the x-rays.

They will often suggest adjustments, physical therapy and massage. All of these will help her get back to normal without pain meds that only mask the true cause of the pain.
I found my chiropractor through the Holistic Moms Network.

I have seen a chiropractor on and off since I was a teenager. I used to get horribly debilitating stomach pains that the MD diagnosed as an ulcer. Turns out it was actually a pinched nerve in my spine. The adjustments took care of it although I need periodic "tune-ups" every few years. Chiropractics was also the only thing that got results on my son's ear infections.

Ask your friends for recommendations. Interview a couple chiros and look for one that isn't into selling tons of extra supplements, products, and services. I prefer a chiropractor who is looking out for my health rather than the next thing they can sell me whether I need it or not (I had one of those and he wasn't even that great at making the adjustments compared to my original guy).

WIth a sports injury, you might be better off with a physical therapist. Call a sports medicine clinic.

I have had great luck with the chiropractor. The one I use is all about encouraging the bodies own natural processes. It's much easier on your body than prescriptions.

My pedi chiro explained it like this: the places get "stuck" and so the muscles and others things around it have to counter balance it and that makes it difficult and painful to heal on its own. The chiro just unsticks the bones so that they can go back to where they are supposed to be anyway, so that the rest of the tissues can heal from the trauma.

I hurt my back as a teen and again in my early 20s.When I did physical therapy it hurt, but that was all, I still couldn't stand up straight or walk well, and when I went to the chiro after weeks of pt, I stood up and walked out better than I had since the accident. It still took a few days to heal and relax, but it was a lot better. I would take her if I were you.

I agree that the chiro should specialize in children/kids. But..having gone to two chiropractors myself, I was turned off by their marketing. When I was ready to stop treatment due to monetary reasons they kept calling me or sending me offers in the mail.

I have a degenerative disk in my L5/S1 (low back) caused by my first pregnancy. I saw about 4 different chiropractors that all tried to fix me in different ways, but the nature of my pain/injury was not discovered until my OB recommended a real MD. I had an MRI and discovered that I had inflammation in my tissue that had spread to the bone, which apparently can be extremely painful (you're telling me...). After getting an accurate diagnosis, I was able to effectively treat and overcome the pain. I will never be 100% and had to give some things up like snowboarding and helping friends move (oh, darn), but I am so much better off after knowing what was really going on with my back.

Even after this experience, I'm still a believer in chiropractic care. HOWEVER, there are a lot of homeopathic, naturopathic, chiropractic quacks out there that just want to take your money and their treatments do nothing at all or can actually do more harm than good. I found a few chiropractors that I trust impeccably and whenever my husband throws his back out, chiropractor is his first stop. And they work wonders every time. Just be sure to go to someone you trust. Ask your friends if they recommend anyone (facebook it or mamapedia it in your area). Good luck to your daughter! Hope she feels better soon!

Nothing wrong with having them give her an adjustment and see if it helps. Maybe a week or so of PT if needed.

I've been adjusted since I was a kid, and both of my girls have since birth. Best thing ever! You don't want to mess around with the spine, because it houses the nervous system, which controls all bodily functions. Get in there!

i have always had the best success with using a chiropractor.. since i was 12 and now in my 60's.. my daughter goes to one and he even puts in her ribs when there out of joint.. she is pain free .. my suggestion is find one who advertizes ..does sport therepy.. and one who is a bit older.. the older the more seasoned they are in my opinion..
when your done with his manipulations.. its good to rest your body so you dont fall out of joint..and I take a few ibprophen.. it keeps swelling down..as sometimes you can be sore afterward..they wont tell you that all the time..but really worth a shot.. i think you will be amazed at the out come ..
