Question About Recovery from Adenoidectomy

My 3 yo will be having his adenoids out and PET tubes put in his ears in a few weeks. He is not having his tonsils removed. During the office visit a few weeks ago his doctor said that he would be able to go back to his regular activities later that day or as soon as he feels up to it. He goes to preschool 5 mornings a week, a night gym class once a week and takes swimming lessons where the teacher has him diving. Most of the sites I have viewed on the internet say no school for a week and no swimming for about 3 weeks with no diving for a month. I would just like to plan a head of time if he will be out of school or his activities. Has anyone's child had just the adenoids out, and what was the recovery like?

What can I do next?

My daughter had tubes put in and her adenoids removed when she was 2. By that evening she was back to her normal self. She was still able to go to her gymnastics class and was swimming the following weekend. I hope this helps.

My daughter had tubes and an adnoidectomy performed when she was three. She had it done on a Friday and was back in preschool on Monday. She was pretty out of it the day of the procedure but the next day she was back to her energetic self. About a week after the prodedure she woke up and threw up this mucousy blob. I immediately called the doctor and he said not to worry it was just the scab from the removal sight that its normal for that to happen. As far as swimming goes I'd check with the doctor, but if your son wears earplugs he should be just fine.

My 2 year old was back to playing like normal by that night. We got home around 10 in the morning, I kept her on her pain medicine until about 6 that night, and as soon as it was wearing off, she was up and playing. He'll be totally fine, but definitely ask the doctor if he's allowed to go to swimming class. That's the only area I could see him maybe having some restrictions at first.

My child had the same thing done when she was 1 1/2. I wouldn't plan do resuming normal activities for a few days. My daughter's throat was sore for a few days and she wasn't eating much. After a few days she was back to normal. She was never given water (bath) restrictions, but I tried not to get water in her ears and she doesn't dive. It will also depend on how your child responds to the procedures. Good luck. I know that the PE Tubes really made a difference.

My 2yo just had his tubes replaced along with an adenoidectomy. He was FINE after his nap that day and went to preschool the very next day. We're not swimming right now so don't know about that but otherwise yours should be fine :-)

My son was also 3 when he had tubes put in and adenoids out. I planned nothing for that weekend and to my amazement, he was up playing that day. The most wonderful thing about that weekend was we went to the mall the next day, As we went from Sears into the main part of the mall, my son put his hands over his ears and looked up at me. I asked him what was wrong, and he responded that it was just so loud!!! Music to my ears, all those years of having fluid in his ears, he wasn't able to hear the world. Yes, the mall is loud. I believe I started crying when he told me that.

Now, the fluid dripping did last a day or two, but with the antibiotics and ear drops things quickly returned to normal. We had it done on a Friday and he was back to school on Monday.

My nephew had his adenoids out 2 summers ago, when he was 7. It took him about 2 days of resting up/down time till he was back at full speed. Eating was a lil' longer. I think he stuck with just soft/liquid foods for a few days more. He was not allowed to swim for 3 weeks.

Your son will not be going back to his regular activities that day...he will be loopy from the anesthesia for awhile, then just sore and tired. I wouldn't plan on having him do anything that day except for going home, lying down in front of some cartoons and eating pudding and taking his medicine:)

I would like to point out...try your best to ensure that his pain meds don't run out. Stay on top of it (for at least the first 24 hours)so he is constantly having some relief from his pain. Do you remember how they explained pain management to you when you had a baby. It is better to take more medicine before you are in pain again...because if you wait till you are hurting, it takes more medicine to take the pain away. So, if directions are for dosing him every 4 hours. I would give it to him every 3 1/2 hours. Does that make sense? Talk to his Dr. about this, he will explain it better than me, I'm sure.

My son had his out and tubes put in two years ago. still has tonsils. He had it done on a wednesday and went back to school on Monday. It was not an easy recovery. He was cranky and clingy the first two days. he was pretty much back to normal the third day. Good luck!

It has been about 16 years since our daughter went through this exact procedure. I remember them saying she would need to stay home from school for at least 3 days (she had the procedure on a Thursday morning.. but went back to school on Monday) and no swimming or water in her ears for 4 to 6 weeks.. They even suggested that she wear cotton in her ears when she was going to be in the wind or extreme cold for a few weeks.. We even covered her ears for baths just in case.

She had her procedure in the hospital and they gave us an instruction list..

Maybe things have changed since then. I would follow your child's lead no matter what they say. If she is still not feeling great I would not send her to school or lessons till she she has her pep back..

BTW our daughter did great, but they had to give my husband a Valium..
