I have an IUD and the literature says that it is common to have spotting or no period at all. I would call your doctors office and speak to a nurse just for piece of mind, though.

I did that also when I had mine. At the time I was breastfeeding and then when I stopped my periods came back. I hope this helps.

I did not bleed for a year with mine. Are you breastfeeding? The cycle can be affected by the breastfeeding horemones as well. I know a lot of people who don't have a period or have very irregular ones when using an IUD. If you're worried, take a test it has been long enough for one of the early detection tests to work if you are preggo.

I work for an OB/GYN. You shouldn't have a period while you have the IUD. Depending on the type, it should stop your periods for upto 5 years.

Hi Shanna, I would call your doctor or take a test to be sure although not bleeding is common with IUD's. Better to be safe and know than to not know. It could be serious if you are pregnant with an IUD! Let us know what the out come is.

It is very normal that you do not have a period with an IUD. When I took the Depo Shot I never had a period and just switched to the IUD last month and haven't had a period yet and honestly, don't really expect to. It's just the way the medicine interacts with your body.

For example, some people do this and bleed ALL the time. However, most doctors put IUD's in while you're on your period.

Dear S.,

Congratulations on your new baby! I have a 4 year old that was born in August 2003. I had an IUD put in in October of 2003 and have loved it. It was a Merina (sp?) . I have had vitrually no periods over since then. If I have any then it is usually only 1 day. I have had occasional spotting, mostly when I have had some real emotional crisis or workout on a regular basis. I have absolutely loved my IUD! I did however panic for the first 6 months or so, and bought pregnancy tests even went to th doctor to make sure it was still there! My 4 year old was a surprise while I was onthe pill and I wasn't emotionally prepared to be pregnant. I have to have a new one next year. It ends up being so convenient. Enjoy and relax!

I got my IUD put in at the beginning of February and have not had a period since! I've also been to the Dr. twice and they did a pregnancy test "just in case" and both were negative! Not having a period is one of the good side effects of the IUD... one less thing for me to worry about with 2 toddlers running around :) I did research (to make myself feel better) & it's pretty common not to have a period because of the hormones that the IUD puts out. If it makes you feel better, take a pregnancy test just to settle your mind. Best wishes & hope you & your family have a blessed holiday!!

Well, there is like a 1 or 2% chance of pregnancy, even with the IUD. But, you're probably not pregnant. I had a Mirena IUD put in back in March (I had a baby June 2006), and I haven't even had spotting since August. Don't worry, you're fine! You could always take a pregnancy test if you think you have other pregnancy signs.

I was told that when I got my IUD, I could stop having periods. I have not been that lucky. Check with your doctor. You may be one of the lucky ones!!
