Could be caused by swallowing saliva...totally normal
OK, sorry this may seem gross. My daughter who is 4 and a half months, has started to have mucous in her bowel movements. She is exclusively breast fed and they are the normal color, but they seem to be more mucousy than normal. Does anyone know what this might mean, or if it is normal? I have tried researching on the internet and asking a few people I know, but nobody seems to know. Thank you.

Mucousy poop at 4 months is probably a sign that your baby is teething! I learned that in my Babies First Class with Jackie Rosenberg!
I had a simular problem that got worse. From what I have read and spoken to our doctor says who says that mucous can be a sign of irritated bowls. Your child may be sensitive to something your baby is eating and if your breastfeeding maybe something your eating. I had to change my diet (no nuts, diary, citrus) My daughter was very sensitive so I had to quit eating eggs and tomatoes as well. Now she 8 months and I can eat everything but nuts and still breatfeed and shes great. We had a lot of issues with her bowels. Please email me if I can help more.
I heard the same thing as what the other R. said, that runny or mucousy bowel movements are from teething and swallowing a large amount of saliva. My sons were the same way on and off from 4-6 months which is when his first tooth came through. Hope that's what the problem is.
This is a very helpful guide to baby poop:
I was told that if they swallow a lot of saliva due to teething then it comes out as mucous in the bowl movement. As long as it's not diarrhea she should be ok. You might want to have the doctor take a look just to reassure you and be certain nothing is wrong.
