Quality, Safe Makeup Brands for Myself and Daughter?

My teenager has been asking a lot more about makeup, and it's had me thinking that I should be thinking about the quality of the products I'm buying as well as the ingredients in them. Thoughts or advice? Hopefully with a budget in mind :)

What can I do next?

I agree Clinique is great! Try and find sales & coupons! Another good option is Bare Minerals! Less $ too! The key is to clean brushes & sponges very often with soap & water! This way bacteria is washed away and won't cause breakouts! Lots of luck! So much fun make up shopping!

My 22 yr old daughter and I use Clinique. I've used it since I was a teen.

When daughter was preteen, I took her to the dermatologist as a proactive approach and Clinique is also recommended by dermatologists.

That said.. with any make up, it's crucial to have a facial routine in morning and evening for cleansing. If she starts good care now, she'll likely have good skin when she's 50.

We make skin care a priority and it shows.

If you go to the Clinique counter (or your choice of brand) they will help you and give you some samples.

What brand do you use?
Good luck!

Another vote for Clinique. Not only have I used it forever, I used to work for Clinique when I was in college. It truly spans all ages and skin types and is a very good product. Good luck with your search!

I like Clinique. Have been using it forever. The products I use are un-fragragranced and I've never had a reaction.

When I was a teen I always bought CoverGirl. It was good makeup for my skin and didn't break me out. I think you can have makeup and NOT spend much money at all.

I switched to Mary Kay in the 70's and loved how it made my skin feel.

We buy a lot of cheap dollar tree and NYNY at Walmart for stage makeup. It's never broken our teen out and it works well on stage. I wouldn't wear it out in public or for an extended amount of time during the day, my point is that all makeup is going to work to some extent.

Makeup that stays on the skin and doesn't flake off or get all oily and stuff is good enough for me.

I wore Mary Kay until they changed their color palettes and formulas back in the 90's and I have never worn their base since. I liked that Mary Kay was different than everyone else and it was based on formulas that worked. The stuff they do today is just like everyone else. There's nothing special about it anymore.

So when I do buy base nowadays I buy CoverGirl or another common brand. I like a liquid base with good coverage. I do not like mineral powder.

The glamour makeup I use is Mary Kay. Although I still prefer Maybelline Great Lash Black Mascara with the heart shaped brush.

One option is to go to a store like Sephora and arrange a consultation. A store like that sells many brands so they will not be trying to push any one brand on you. It can be a nice way to explore products.

Well, if your worried about ingredients and such - you can't beat just not using any.

Makeup is expensive - even the cheap stuff.
It gets contaminated with bacteria and we're suppose to throw away unused makeup regularly - and I don't know anyone who throws it away when they should.

When I was teen I used it - and it started irritating my eyes (even the hypoallergenic stuff) especially when wearing contacts.
Teens play around with it but it's just better not to go too overboard with it.

Just keep in mind that "natural" products aren't always better. Many natural ingredients can be very irritating. I tend to read online reviews before I purchase any makeup.
