Hello, I'm just wondering if any of yall have received (or heard) of false positives on the quad screen testing? I also have read that the false positive (or indication) rate goes up with age. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

I literally just asked this question over a month ago. Im 22 and received abnormal quad results indicating a 1 in 18 chance for a Downs baby. I was referred to a specialist and was given a 2nd quad screen which also came back with high chances of Down's. I decided to have an amnio a few weeks ago. My results came back last Friday and everything was perfect. The quad screen is a JOKE. I will never get one again because of all the worry. I had 2 false positives and the amnio gives definate results. I wouldn't worry to much the false positive rates are ridiculous.

2 of my 3 children were false positives, my first child was the only one with a negative result that was accurate. It didn't help that I was 33 and 39 with tmy second and third children. Right from the start because of my age my numbers sucked. Didn't matter how healthy I was or anything. When I went to the genetic counselor they send you too my numbers improved a ton upon simply answering the additional uestions. I had the indepth ultrasounds with both. My second child there was what turned out to be an immature circulatory system that resolved itself in about a month but because of the fluid buildup we did the amnio, he's completely healthy. With my third not a single thing came up on the ultrasound so we skiped the amnio (I had also had contractions with the second child and we thought I was going to miscarry so we weren't keen on doing the amnio unless any of the "markers" were seen) She's completely healthy as well and just over a year old now.

Yes. I know so many women that have had false screenings. 7 years ago when I was pregnant with the first child, I was advised to forgo the test. She said that it produced more problems than it prevented because of the testing. With this pregnancy, I was a 1 minute discussion. I declined the test. Tests like that are helpful depending on what you'll do with the information. Will you seek more testing? Will you abort with your knowledge?

Those tests are unreliable according to what I've read.

Yep. False positive for Downs - and I was 26.

We didn't do a second test or an amnio. The nape of the neck and heart were clearly visible in the sonogram, and the tech said that since neither had the sort of visible issues common with Downs and the test is inaccurate, we had no reason to worry. He was right.

I've had false posotives with every one of my pregnancies, currently pregnant with # 4. I had my first child at 18 so age is not a factor regarding the false posotives. Try not to stress and worry yourself, I wouldn't even advise you to get the amnio, unless your absolutely sure you wouldn't keep the baby if it did have down. I did the amnio with my last 2 pregnancies, of course everything came back normal and so this time around when I failed the first test, I said since I'm not considering terminating the pregnancy if the baby had down, the what's the point of going through another amnio?
I think you'll find a lot of women on this site who have been through the same thing and everything came out normal for their babies.
Here's another site that can be helpful to you right now.

Good luck and best wishes to you.

yeah, they are common. The Quad test shows if there are possible markers and further testing might want to be done but is not a diagnostic in and of itself. I have heard of many people getting false positives.

Yes, I went through having a false positive on our second baby, that I gave birth to january 2009 at the age of 34. I had to go to another doctor some perinatologist so they could measure the baby's bones, brain mass, stomach etc. Our daughter was just fine. Our perinatal doc stated that the majority of the test come back with false positives like the sugar test for gestational diabetes; but its always good to be reassured.
