Purse Problem

Hi Moms,

I walk around my house aimlessly and completely clueless each and every single day of my life on my daily search for my purse. I am not kidding - this happens EVERY SINGLE DAY!! I circle my house like a dog spins in circles, trying to chase his tail. I just cannot remember where I put my purse when I come home from being out. Every day, I tell myself that I must have a special place to always put my purse, and every day, I forget. Every day, I get home from dopping off my kids or doing errands and my purse lands wherever. I am not even conscious of where it lands - it somehow leaves my shoulder and ends up anywhere. It is very scary - I feel like I am losing my mind. I have a special place for my keys and sunglasses and it works - why can't I do this with my purse? My question is, what do all of you do to keep track of your purses? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Faith H. asked why I can't put my purse in the same place I put my keys and sunglasses. It's because the place I put them isn't big enough for my purse. I need to find a "purse place." However, once I find a purse place, I also need to remember to put my purse there! (that is the hardest part - remembering to put my purse somewhere in particular) Also, to answer Leslie D's question - yes, I have small kids, ages 7, 4, and 3, and they make me lose my mind every single day!

Pick a spot. Put it there. Repeat! You'll remember after it's a habit. 21 days I think.
Actually I've got more than O. 'spot' but it's 99% in O. of 3 places!

I have a certain spot by the stairs where I put my bag everytime I come home. Even if I have a million things to do, I take 15 seconds to put it in it's place like I do with my keys and sunglasses.

I hang it on the coat rack right when I walk in or put it on the floor next to the front door. Sometimes I forget and ask the kids to help me look for it. LOL

Hah, I do that with my keys every day.

My purse, however, I hang on the back of a kitchen chair when I get in and it stays there until I need it again.

You would think I would just toss my keys in my purse - um, no, that would be too simple. Okay, I confess, I have tried that, then forget the keys are in the purse, then walk around in circles anyway.

Mine is put on a bar stool (rarely used with little ones) when you first walk in our kitchen off the porch. I walk in and put it there, first thing, everytime!

Maybe you could put up a hook or a little table right inside the door. For a few weeks make a big sign, "LEAVE YOUR PURSE HERE!!!" Once it's a habit, you'll just put your purse there without thinking.

I keep my keys and purse on the front seat of my car--my car is always parked in the garage. They're always where I need them!

Mine hangs on the coat closet door knob right at the top of my entry way stairs...always has, always will...OR I would be the same as you!

~My thing is my drivers license, I take it out often and only carry it instead of my whole purse when husband and I go out and I can NEVER find it!

I have a small shelf for hubby's wallet, and gloves etc, hooks under it for DD's jacket & diaper bag & my purse, and a magnetic strip beside that for keys. I watched an Oprah episode about what bacterias are on womens purses, (it was pretty bad!) and have never set my purse on anything since, no floors, no counter or table, I hang it up. That way I dont pick up anything & I dont transfer anything to my tables etc. (and its never lost :)

I tend to keep my cell phone in my purse and use the house phone when I'm home. So I ring my cell phone to find it (and my purse). Of course, I generally keep my purse right as I walk in the door. It isn't pretty, but it is easy to find.

I leave my purse in the car, lock it and bring in the keys. The keys go in the basket by the garage door. Simple. :)

Hang on the doorknob of the door you come in and out. It's there when you're ready to leave again. Personally, I park in the garage at our house and mine never comes in with me. I only need it when I go somewhere and not in the house. Sunglasses stay in the car too. Why bring those in?? If I parked in a public place or even outside in the drive, I wouldn't leave purse in the car though.

I have for the past 25 years always kept my purse in the car between the seats. I don't bring it in the house at all. for the same reason you state. We are moving soon. I have been packing for a month. My purse is lost. I don't remember taking it out of the car or leaving it anywhere but it is gone. I never leave credit cards in the purse so thank god for that. but my photos of the kids/grandkids and multiple store cards like jewel, borders etc its a big stress. I am going to hang a hook right inside the garage door for my purse when we move lol

I come in the door and before I do anything else the purse goes on the table by the door. It is definately a routine. My problem comes when I take my keys out of my purse (to get something out of the car without going anywhere). I never remember to put them back in my purse. I also end up in a bind when my husband cleans the table and moves my purse. He thinks he is putting in a logical place where I can find it but to me the table is the most logical space. I found it on the doorknob to the laundry room last week - It is on the other side of the house from the door!. I am the one doing the laundry but really - that is the most logical place in the house?!

We bought some hooks and put them directly onto the wall. Originally they were suppose to be for my kids coats, but they work perfect for my diaper bag and purse.

Hmmm... Do you have small children? When my daughter was still in her carrier, and my son was not yet two, I had that same problem! I think its called "mommy mind" and its from being sleep deprived and also because you are so busy thinking about your babies you dont have any brain matter left for other things...

I had that same problem. I cleared some space on a bookshelf near the door, and I put it there. It took a while to get used to doing that - sometimes I would find myself wandering around the house, after coming home, with my purse still on my shoulder and I would have to go back to the shelf to put it down. If I noticed I put it someplace OTHER than the shelf, I would move it there.

Its made a big difference. I now know where my purse is most of the time.

I park in my garage and going into the laundry room from the garage, I am then dumped out into my kitchen. My purse goes on the kitchen counter by the pantry. Always. My cell phone stays in it as do my keys. So rather than having a spot for your keys, sunglasses, etc... why not have a spot for your purse and keep your other necessities IN it.?

If you don't have a spot big enough, make one. Get a coat rack for the wall. Or just a drawer pull that you can screw/mount on the wall solely to hang your purse on. (Be sure it is hung properly so that it will bear the weight). I made a vertical coat rack in my laundry room for the kids' backpacks, karate bags and lunchboxes. actually I made 2. They are on 1 x 4s, painted, with drawer pulls/hooks mounted a few feet apart, drilled into the wall studs (vertically). Saw it in a magazine. They work fabulously! right behind the door.

Go to a craft store. They have beautiful home accessories. Find a beautiful hook that you can hang right by your front door. As soon as you walk in, hang it up and then you won't have to search.

Purse is not a problem for me. It's 1 foot long and bright red! I plop it on the end table when I come in the door.
Keys, on the other hand - big problem. They are 2 inches long and black. They blend into everything and I end up going in circles chaisng my tail.

Husband - T. where are the keys?
Me - Uh, I dunno. Did you try by the computer? how about the mantle? kitchen counter? hmmm, in the door? BINGO!

Sounds like an easy fix - just get a hook by the door. Yeah, ok, It's really that simple to fix but you are forgetting that I have a screwy, distracted, human brain that has been on autopilot for years when it comes to keys. If I had back all the time I spent looking for my keys!

HAHAHAHAHA!!! I am the exact same way! My husband always has a place for everything, and he would always put my purse in the SAME place when we would walk in the door (I would fling it *wherever*, without even thinking! and he would pick it up, LOL!) So, now I am in the habit of picking it up in the same place, and now I put it back in that same place without even thinking!

Can you put a hook to hang your purse under the place where you put your other things?

I have the same problem. I will often be carrying in a sleeping baby that I need to carry up to her crib and I can't put my purse down without dropping her so it ends up in our bedroom or I've got my arms full of shopping or take out or something and I drop it in front of the pantry or it gets put by the couch when I'm paying bills and cleaning it out, charging camera batteries etc. I try to put it in the same places, I just have several places it could be depending on what was going on when I set it down. That way I kow it's in one of the handful of places. I try to remember what the last thing I was doing when I had it to try to narrow down the small handful of places I look to look first. My purse is actually a backpack style and holds the world so I use it all the time, even in the house.

Why can't you put your purse where your keys and sunglasses are? That would only make sense. I guess I don't get it cuz I've never had this problem. I walk in the house and drop my purse, keys and glasses in the exact same place every single day and they are always in that place for the next time I need them. I hope you find something that works for you...good luck!!!

My keys, sunglasses/glasses, and purse stay in the same spot. Sorry, I don't have any great suggestions. My ex loses his keys pretty much every day. I've never understood it - important things have one (or at most, two) "home(s)" and that's where they stay!
