Looking to get my standard poodle puppy into some puppy training classes. With Petsmart and Petco and so many others, I just wanted some recommendations of where to to go from all of you. Collin county or North dallas ideally. thanks!

So What Happened?

We are doing training at Dog City Training facility in Addison! Super reasonable and the trainer is fantastic. I highly recommend them!

We did Petsmart and thought it was really good. I know how to train a dog, we did it more for socialization and to train my daughter who was 11 at the time.
It gives you an excuse to go to the Pet store and take your dog, otherwise you can do it at home but without the benefit of other puppies to socialize with.

Ask the vet. Vets know the good vs. the poor trainers.

I took my puppy Bella to Pet Smart and I wasn't really happy with the classes. (I'm in Raleigh, North Carolina though....maybe they are different where you are) I thought it was going to be more one on one training. Maybe it was my fault...and I should have asked more questions before I started the classes. But it was more like she tells us what were supposed to do and we're the ones that have to train her. Good luck!!!

I went to petsmart and I think that their methods are good. They did great for our pup. Plus you get lots of different kinds of socialilzing being in store their size. Have fun.

I'm not sure about that area, but I do recommend Triple Crown in the Austin area, especially if you are going to go on vacation or something and need to have your dog boarded, they will do training while you are gone. There are also classes and lessons. The facilities are top notch and the trainers are really effective and know their stuff.

In your area, I would avoid the petco/petsmart classes and find someone that specifically does training. Just google it I'm sure you'll find one. The pet store classes tend to be pretty low quality as far as actual training goes.

I'm from CO so I cant really tell you about who to go to in your area. I do like the train your dog yourself verses having someone train them for you. You will need to be the pack leader and know how to get them to respond to you. I used the Petsmart program and had a great experience. That being said, I had been working there and knew the trainer and liked how she taught. There had been a trainer there previously that I did not like one bit. I think the key is to talk to the trainers and get a feel for their methods and their personality. Each dog is going to respond differently to different methods. Our trainer taught on a reward system and I had a dog with a will work for food attitude and would cringe if I barely scolded her. I have another that could care less about the food, she was the one I had to really show dominance and lavish praise for the good things. Also check into any local recreation center. Ours in town has classes as well. Good luck with your puppy.
