Pulling Head up When Taking a Bottle

My 8 month old is pulling his head up when he is taking his bottle. He usually only does this with me. At first I was concerned that he couldn't breathe while drinking, but I can hear him breathing through his nose while he's sucking. I am holding him in a cradle position but he does it when I have him in my lap facing forward as well. I have tried different positions. Has anyone had any experience with this? What causes it? Is it just a phase, like most baby things? Is there anything I am doing wrong while feeding him?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried to sit him up while feeding, and that didn't really work, and the larger flow nipple was too fast for him and he got a lot of air, so that didn't work. The good news is that it seems to have corrected itself so far. Thanks for all your help Mamas!!

I have 3 small children, ages 3, 2, and 5 months. Sounds to me like your little one just doesn't like that position anymore. They do grow out of being cradled. (Not a baby anymore, so sad) Try switching to a sippy cup. Most babies have the ability to hold a cup by 6 months and feed themselves after you teach them how a few times. And at this age, he probably would prefer to sit up while he eats and drinks.
By 8 months, consider having him sit in a high chair along side you at meal times and giving him the usual breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner. Your baby is growing up :)

You've already got some great answers here. I thought about the nipple flow immediately. Could be too slow.
Also, at 8 months, he is not going to be content to lie down and take a bottle any more. He is getting to be a big boy. Lying down to nurse is boring for him ! In fact, I bet with a little work, he could be holding his own bottle now, and sitting up to drink it all by himself.
Anyway, I'm sure he is fine. He is just growing up !

Could it be the flow on the nipple? Maybe it's coming too fast or too slow. I'd try changing the nipple flow and see if that helps.

My son, at eight months, pulls his head up when he takes a bottle or nurses. I've found it to be one of two things. It could be 1) he sees something interesting and just has to check it out for a minute or 2) he wants a few seconds' break before getting back to the business at hand. This may or may not be why your little one is doing it, but that's what I've found for mine.

Hi K.. I'm a first time mom too (at 34). My daughter is a little over 6 months old now. She has recently started to prefer sitting more upright when I give her the bottle. If I hold her too flat she tries to lift her head and whines a little. Maybe they just start to prefer being more upright after they get a little older. I sit her on my lap with the back of her head resting on my upper arm/shoulder.

K.,

My daugheter who is now 3, was 10 weeks early as well. Could be he is interested in something and wants to see, probably a phase. Nipple flow is another that comes to mind. I know as a mother of a preemie - we tend to worry. Probably just a phase, I would not be overally, concerned.
