Hello Everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else had experience SPD or symphasis pubic dysfunction during pregnancy and/or delivery. I have a 14 month old son and had a very severe case of this after his delivery. Now that I know more about it, i also realized that it started in my 5th month of pregnancy. Just wanted to get some feedback about other's who have also experienced this.

I still have hip/back issues and pain from this. My main concern is what will happen during my next pregnancy. any feedback is greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I would suggest two things that really helped me: a chiropractor and swimming. I had the SPD first with my twin pregnancy (it was really, really bad then--that pregnancy ended at six months, sadly, and I lost both boys) and then again, but to a much lesser extent, with my daughter. Swimming during the pregnancy helped tremendously, and my chiropractor worked magic.

Good luck!

i had that with my third pregnancy and it went away after 6 months i used heat and a warm bath that helped....I never thought of swimming like the one woman suggested but that might work to...as for your future pregnancys you never know like they say all of them are different...good luck...

Hi J.,
I had this with my second child which made no sense because she was smaller then my first. But I also work in an L&D dept in a hospital and I always hear the doctors tell patients that it most likely will occur in future pregnancies especially if the babies get bigger. I feel your pain. My husband and I are thinking of having a 3rd and I cringe of the thought of the pain that it causes. I don't know about you but the severe pain I had lasted a month after delivery. I hope this pregnancy for you stays uneventful w/o any pubic bone pain.

I don't know to much about SPD. But Here is a thought. Talk to you doctor and then see a message therapist. Might sound crazy, but you just might get some relife and you can have messages threw a pregnancy.

Hi J.!
My advice - go to the ICPA4Kids.org website and find a chiropractor who specializes in working with pregnant women. I have separated my Pubic symphasis during all 3 of my pregnancies. It is horrible and debilitating. I am 28 weeks with #4 and so far so good. My chiropractor pops it back in place. It hurts like crazy when she does it, but I am then pain free for weeks.
Best wishes!!
A.

Wow! I had never heard of this before reading your request, so I decided to do a search on the internet, and I am glad I did. During my 2nd pregnancy, in the last 2 or 3 months, I developed a horrible pain in the pubic area, but figured it was just because the baby was putting a lot of pressure on the pelvis. Then in my 3rd pregnancy, I had the same pain, only much worse, and throughout the entire pregnancy- it was especially painful when I would try to sleep; I couldn't roll over or get out of bed without tremendous pain. I ended up sleeping on the sofa for the entire pregnancy because it was closer to the ground and easier to get up from. I never even asked my doctor about it, because again, I just assumed it was pressure, plus the result of 3 pregnancies in 3 years reaking havoc on my body. Thankfully I haven't had any problems after delivery. But in reading about SPD, I finally have an answer for the pain. I am so glad you posted this. Now all we need is a way to find relief. Two of the web-sites I found with some helpful info when I did a search were

http://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm
http://www.permanente.net/homepage/kaiser/pdf/47261.pdf

they talk about the symptoms, and list a few ideas for relief. I'm sorry I have no tried and true measures, but again, thank you for putting a name to the pain. It's always nice to know other people have had the same experience and can understand how you are feeling. I am writing this info down so when my husband and I decide to get pregnant again I can talk to the doctor.
