Psychic & Medium Readings?

My best friend of 15 years is very much into things like psychcic readings, ghosts & spirits, medium abilities, reincarnation, and things like astrology & dream interpretations. I just had my 29th birthday last week and she informed me that she purchased a 30-minute psychic/medium reading for me with a guy that she recently spoke to. She said she was able to 'commune' with her deceased grandfather. Keep in mind, I'm rolling my eyes the entire time at her. As a new-ish Christian, I certainly don't close my mind as to what God is able to do, but I do tend to protect myself from situations that may mislead me in my walk in my faith, so until I know more about what His Word says about such things, I won't take a firm stance either way.

However, it certainly sparked a curiosity. I passed on the reading for now, but I was curious to ask you Moms if you have any experience with these types of things. Have you ever had a psychic or medium reading? Do you do it regularly? What are your experiences?

So What Happened?

I wanted to add that I'm not really interested in getting a reading. I don't really have any deceased relatives or friends that I am interested in "reaching out" to through a medium, and as for psychic readings, to tell you the truth I wouldn't be interested in knowing what the future brings anyway. I'm just curious what other Moms think about it.

I think they are fun! But psychic/mediums are like anybody else. Some are better at their jobs than others!

So, yes, I have been to such people and enjoyed my time. Do I believe every word.......... no, because the reader is interpreting and don't always interpret correctly.

I say go, and treat it as fun, spooky entertainment. If you don't give it power, then it has no power over you, imo.

If psychics could really read the future, they would be billionaires and play the stock market.

Good luck to you and yours.

Hi N., I don't know much about psychic or mediums, I do find it interesting, but not enough to pursue it. However, I don't completely DISBELIEVE anything at all, really. I like to keep an open mind.

If a good friend gave a reading as a gift to me, I would probably just go. Enjoy it for what it's worth, not take too much stock in it, but I wouldn't be fearful that it would negatively effect my relationship with God either.

Why not have some fun with it?

I have never been to one, but my mom tried once and the lady came right out and said she couldn't read her. I believe that some people are psychic or mediums etc. and of course some are total scam artists. No one can truly see the future or give you the winning lottery numbers. It is mostly that people have stronger senses then others and cannot always have control of what info they get.
I do not think that going to one person would pull you from your faith or be considered evil. I do believe that most of the people that are this way do have a good conscience. They are not the ones you see in advertisements on TV in the wee hours of the morning pushing you to call a 900 number.

i'm a tarot and rune reader, used to do it regularly in a lovely local bookstore but since they closed i do it mostly as a love offering.
although i do read in exchange for lunch. or a coffee treat. quite often.
:)
i don't look at divinatory tools as 'fortune telling' in that they don't reveal some written-in-stone future. a good reader can interpret the signs and give you some insight into what's going on with you at the time, which can be validating, or enlightening, or troublesome, depending on how honest you are with yourself to start with. frequently there are moments of insight that are exciting and genuinely helpful. but sadly no lottery ticket numbers or promises to marry johnny depp.
a lot of anger gets leveled at readers for doing 'cold readings' ie reading the reactions of the client, not actually delving into any sort of paranormal media to get 'real' messages. guilty as charged. i'm completely not able to divorce myself, my intuition, my life experience and my personal wisdom from some woo-woo extraterrestrial communication. i believe that my popularity rests in my ability to use the tools as a communications device to access archetypal images that have genuine useful messages to share. if i turned off my own accumulated wisdom and knowledge i'd be about as soulless as a machine. so if someone wants an 'unbiased' reading, they're better off hitting one of the internet venues. i can't help reacting to what i'm told, what i see and what i feel.
people really get out of it what they invest in it. a lot of people just do it for fun, and they have fun! sparkly, giggly, cool readings, rarely with a lot of depth. people desperate to be told what to do next are generally unsatisfied. that isn't what i'm there to do, and i make that clear at the beginning. people looking for some signposts and insights and clarifications have been my best and most reliable clients.
occasionally a message from a departed ancestor or friend will come through. it's not my specialty and i can't promise or predict that.
i think that if your response is to roll your eyes at the possibility, passing on the opportunity was a good call. it's certainly not for everyone, and dismissing it out of hand is a surefire way to ensure that it will be a waste of your time. ask her to take you out to a nice lunch instead.

Listen, people get what they want out of it. It someone goes and is desperate to hear a loved one, they are going to hear them. It's no difference then the placebo effect. My friend went to a physic and I sat there with her. 9I didn't participate.) and the lady pretty much asked so many leading questions. I could have given my friend the answer the lady did. (It wasn't really an answer, she didn't read the future. It was more like...guidance, you could say. Still I could have guided my friend right where the nut job did.) It's like magic, it's all illusions. This person learns how to read someone. If you ask me it's a scam and preying on people. In some cases, yes I believe it's the tool of the devil...and yes, I believe the Bible addresses that.

Simply put, I don't trust any person who tries to have such an effect on my life. They give their "abilities" too much credit. I don't need a person playing God, and thinking they can interpret or guide my path. ESPECIALLY, when they take my money to do so.

Since you admit that you are a new Christian and not sure what the Bible says about such things, I would suggest you discuss it with your clergy.

It is made quite clear in Leviticus that consulting such mediums and dabbling in the occult is an offense to the Lord. And can be dangerous to you.

I'm curious, though, what it is that you hope to gain if you were to go? Knowing the future? We are told in the Bible that we have enough troubles for today today, not to begin worrying about tomorrow's troubles until they are here.

I definitely think there are some people out there with gifts or extra-sensory perception who can tune into energy and things that most of us can't. I've had numerous experiences myself with dreams and "knowing" things and knowing about people when I first meet them that are honestly a little freaky, but I've learned to listen to it. Of course there a LOT of charlatans out there who flip out some tarot cards and tell you what they glean that you want to hear. But not all!

Years ago I went to a woman who was recommended by a friend. In order to see her, you had to be recommended. She did not advertise. She came up to an office in Atlanta once a month and you could schedule a session with her. She audio taped all sessions. She asked that you bring a piece of jewelry that you wore all the time or most of the time and preferably that you had owned for awhile. She would say hello, but that's it -she took the piece of jewelry, held your hands for a minute and then started talking.

She never asked questions to draw information out of you, but she would start telling you what she saw and felt and often how far out in time she thought certain things would be. She did tell you up front that she did not report on death and that she also believed in free will, so you could take whatever she said but to still understand that you always had a choice as to how your life was going to go.

She also said that most of her readings were 85-95% accurate from what she ascertained from long-time clients. She never claimed to be 100%. I still have my tapes and they're pretty amazing. I found my mother's tape from when she went, and I still haven't listened to it. I don't know why. I know she wouldn't have told my mother if she saw her death, but for some reason I just haven't been able to listen to it yet. I do believe she was for real though.

I still don't know what to make of John Edwards who supposedly has such a gift of speaking with the dead. I've read and seen enough of him that I think he may actually have quite a gift. I can tell you this, if I ever had the opportunity to sit down with him to reach my mother, I would do it in a heartbeat and see how I felt after.

Since the Bible crowd is weighing in so heavily against it, make sure you go to the library and check out the MISSING books of the Bible that kings and rulers have had removed over the centuries. Many of them discuss reincarnation, astrology, psychic ability, etc. -and not in bad terms. I think you have a much better take on God, and I don't understand why seeing a psychic would be mutually exclusive to being a Christian. The Bible says not to do A LOT of things, but many of them are ridiculous.

I believe the whole poo-poo on psychics and reincarnation and whatnot stems from a control issue. If the masses ever thought they got another shot at another life here on earth or that someone may be able to guide them by seeing the future, then maybe the king wouldn't command so much power. Funny, almost ALL of these kings and rulers who had these books removed used sorcerers, fortune tellers and astrologers at court in an official capacity. Just some food for thought.

I will leave you with this -my grandmother died when I was 13. The night she died she came to me in an amazingly vivid "goodbye" dream. We talked in the dream and it was a wonderful experience I will always hold dear. It wasn't demonic -it was beautiful.

Well, seeing as I am from a family of Psycics and Mediums and laying of the hand Healers AND I have a wonderful relationship with God and follow his teaching of love and light I see no conflict of interests so long as you see someone who IS doing this for EVERYONE'S highest and best good - not someone who is just out to make a buck. Now, I can understand your fears or even skeptic nature, but I do not think a visit will deem you a heathen! Sometimes they get nothing - and sometimes you have a wonderful reading full of confirmations and sometimes you get a message - no matter what you get YOU chose what YOU do with the information. Some accept it and incorporate it into their lives (healthy), some move on and forget it happened (healthy), some become attached to it and use it as a way to navigate their lives (unhealthy). You have to do what is right for you and no one else.

And no, they do not read the future - they interperate things they have been given/see/feel etc you will not get the winning lotto numbers or know the right path for certain. In addition there are times where they are wrong seeing that a message can be as simple as a letter, color and a feeling and they proceed from there asking questions of the subject and their "contact" or "Spirit Guide" - plus, everyone is different in their readings and ways of contact. If you would like to know more you can PM me otherwise, enjoy your reading if you chose to go.

N., I'm so glad you posted this question. You are so wise to pass this up as a Christian. The bible has plenty to say about it. You may have rolled your eyes (as I'm sure there are many who fake this "gift"), but there is power behind these things and it is a real phenomenon. However, this is not of God or from God. So any power that people find in these occult practices comes from an entity other than God.

Please pick up this book by Bill Shoebelen called Lucifer Dethroned. It is an incredible story of an atheist turned white witch, to black magik to Satatnism, to Christianity. This is a life changing book about how the powers of God and Satan are at work. It will inspire you in the power of prayer and of God to protect his children, but it is very revealing in the demonic activity around us and the tactics that Satan employes through spiritual agencies to deceive.

Speaking with the dead, known as necromancy, is frequently and often forbidden in the bible, see link below, as well as consulting mediums, looking to the stars and planets to predict the future, divination, sorcery, and witchcraft.

Little do people know who think they are speaking with deceased spirits, they are speaking with demons. The scriptures even states that "Satan disguises himself as an angle of light" (2 Cor. 11:14). Many, even christain who should know better, are being deceived by spiritualism and the deceptions brought on by the belief we can have contact with the dead.

Did you know God caused the death of king Saul for committing the sin of consulting a spirit medium? So yes, I'd say God defiantly has an opinion about these practices.

I might go, simply for curiosity sake. I believe people have gifts, I am not about to condemn them for having them.

I also believe that there are some incredibly fake psychics out there.

Sylvia Brown? Big ol' phony. All of her answers are yes. Am I going to get this deal? Yes. Will I find love? Yes. Never anything specific.

I used to watch John Edwards when he had a show. He struck me as the real deal. He never tried to predict the future, just passed on what messages he got from loved ones. People never really asked him questions, he just sat back and let it roll in on him.

I'm not sure I have strong feelings either way. I fully believe there are things possible that I don't comprehend. I'm not sure I want to dabble in them though. My pastor takes the stance that you shouldn't open yourself up to spirits and make yourself vulnerable. If we beilieve as Christians that we go to heaven, than how can we commune with spirits? Can we just call them down from Heaven? No, we don't command Heaven. So, are they stuck in Pergatory? It's all very interesting to think about. Do you have a mentor at church? I would ask them for guidance.

BTW, no offense to those that have those gifts. I think it's amazing, just too risky for me.

I am a christian mother and I think it is fine to get a reading for fun. The only thing is, many in that line of work are legitimate but many are not. If you are going to get a reading I'd find someone that is reputable.
I do believe in those kinds of things but I especially believe in one's self. I have had some precognitive dreams before and my church said that , that kind of thing was ok. They showed me many excerpts of divination in the bible that I had completely forgotten. However, psychics are looked down upon usually because even if they are able to contact the dead, in the Bible it says that who the psychics/mediums contact are actually demons and not your loved ones, because your loved ones are in heaven rejoicing with the Lord. However, everyone interprets the bible differently.
BUT, if you are strong in your faith then nothing can take you from that. It is okay to go get a reading , or whatever you want to do. Like I said,Many things in the Bible are interpreted differently, so follow your heart and do what you want to do.

I, too, come from a family of healers and seers and have psychic abilities and a healthy God-relationship. That healthy relationship has evolved over the years; I used to consider myself a Christian. I don't think that this should interfere with your current religious practices, but maybe that would depend on what you were practicing/observing before declaring yourself Christian and what you are hoping/looking for. You don't want to have too much swimming around in your head, but keep your mind open to what resonates with your spirit. That's how you'll figure out your right combination.

I personally have never done a reading but I did get my palm read at a fair once!

Not sure what I believe but I do not feel there is any harm in them.

~My cousin went to a John Edwards event and he picked her out of the crowd and talked to her about her son who had been recently murdered...he got lots of details right and gave her chills (me chills too when she relayed the story) and brought her comfort....so I think that one instance was a good thing!

Don't go. This is not something God wants us to be doing. If we need to know something, pray to HIM. I once knew a lady that did this for a living. Demons and things not of God lead these people. The bible says not to do these things. I did it before I was a Christian. I regret it. These people on here that say they have a relationship with God and do this dont have a REAL relationship with God. Ask them where in the bible it says it's ok to do these things. If God wanted us to get information from these people it would be in HIS WORD. Fun or not, pick something else to do for fun. Don't mean to disrespect anyone who has left replies, I just know how powerful this stuff is. Satan is powerful. He will suck you in. Let God lead you.
