My son is 15m and I am nursing about 4x a day, and on the mini pill, but haven't had a period still. Should I go on provera or is this still w/in normal range? I'm also having other symptoms: hungry and eating more than ever, but losing or maintaining weight. How much is a 15m old nursing? Is that what's making me burn so many calories? I often get beyond tired, thethargic...

What can I do next?

I was on the mini pill and nursing my daughter til she was about14-16 months. I stayed on the mini pill and never had a period til I was ready to try for my son 3 yrs later. My doctor says you don't have to have a period. It's fine without. When your body needs to have one it will. I of course went off the mini pill to get pregnant with my son and had a period at that time. Don't worry. Enjoy not having any D. G

Erin,

My doctor and NP said to me that if I am taking my Minipill and nursing regularly I do not have to worry about getting pregnant again. Nursing naturally signals hormone that make it more difficult to get pregnant and taking the minipill just decreases the chances even more. Additionally, you burn 500 calories nursing so I am not suprised you are losing or maintaining your weight eating a lot. I am the same way. I eat at least every 3-4 hours and have steadily lost weight. In fact I am below my prepregnancy weight. If I were you I'd ask to get a work up to check your thyroid maybe. I have hypothyroidism which means my body has to send several signals to release a metabolism hormone before my body will hear it. Thus, I am very tired and unmotivated to do anything. I am on medication which has made a tremendous difference. I am not saying that's what you have but it maybe worth checking out!

Good luck,
M. P

Hi Erin,

I didn't start my period until my breast milk began to slow down and eventually stop.

You also may want to check with your Gyno to see if everything is OK.

As for your energy situation you are burning calories! Are you replacing the nutrients that your body is producing? Especially calcium. The more you lactate, if you're pumping your milk to donate, your body will naturally replace it but your diet has to support your production. Especially if you are exercising, keeping hubby happy, or trying to keep up with other children and the household chores.

Don't forget to take your vitamins and minerals!

Peace!
Lee

I breastfed my kids for 2 years. I didn't get my period until each baby was between 16-18 months old. You are absolutely normal. Nursing takes a lot out of you! It can be an energy drain, and it does burn calories. I'm sure your mom has told you that. And don't underestimate the amount of energy it takes to be the mommy of a 15 month old! :0) Hang in there! When he is a teenager you will wish you had these days back again!

My son is 23 months and still nurses the same amount. I was on the minipill for awhile then decided to try the depo-provera.I hated it, and after 9 months have switched back to the mini-pill. I had a complete loss of desire for intimicy and my relationship has suffered greatly. After so long of being able to eat whatever because of the calories I burned nursing my son, I all of a sudden started putting a ton of weight on around my mid section. Talking to other women I have heard the same story of loss of desire and weight gain on depo-provera, I would not recommend it. Also, I got my period back after 6months, however, on depo-provera I went from slightly irregular to extremely irregular, i even had a period that lasted 5 weeks. dont knowif there is a connection or not

Hi Erin,

I am no Doctor - but I would say avoid the provera if you can. I was on it a few times and I hated it. It made me SOOO HUNGRY all the time. Each time I was on it I gained weight because I was starving 24/7.

Just my thoughts,
G.
