As long as it is whey-based and not soy-based you should be fine, since soy mimics estrogen and you don't want to be messing with your hormone levels during pregnancy.

Yes - just double check with your OB/Midwife about the nutritional content that you need.

Yes. Protein shakes are just food.

I drank protein shakes before during and after my pregnancy. They are still my favorite breakfast.

On soy - the idea that soy mimics estrogen is FAR from proven. The only studies have used far higher amounts of soy than we would normally eat. Other results show the positive effects of soy. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/27/ask-well-is-it-s...

Hi Shorty,

To answer your question, yes they're fine. To address the soy issue....there are varying opinions and I won't get into them however, corn and soy are the primary crops that are genetically modified and that is TERRIBLY dangerous. Also, there are dairy farms that are feeding their cows GMO corn so you need to be aware of the dairy used in any shake. A lot of people don't think this is a big deal but if you google the pictures of the research, you'll probably throw up.

Most prenatals/and general nutrition don't absorb any better than drug store brand and also can cause free radicals so make sure you are on a powerful antioxidant as well. I take a vitamin that doesn't cause free radicals and is patented and guaranteed to absorb but most people,e.g. doctors, don't do their research.

Hope this helps!
