Protein Shakes - Washington,DC

As many of you know, I am having gastric bypass next Thursday. I have to be on liquids only for two weeks after surgery, which includes two protein shakes a day. Is there a certain brand/flavor/etc that you can recommend that isn't horrible?

I am on OptiFast right now, and I'm not really enjoying it, but it's worth the temporary misery to be healthy. It has too much sugar in it for me to continue this after surgery though.

Some of the brands the doctor's office suggested are Unjury and IsoPur. Any ideas? They also said we can just get Whey Protein and mix it...I'll need convenience most of the time though...so premade is best.

What can I do next?

My husband prefers the Designer Whey line. Vanilla and Chocolate both. He does things like putting some peanut butter in the blender with the chocolate one.

I'm so excited for you that you're having the surgery. My best advice, having been there (well, lap-band isn't the same thing, but still), is to make sure you ALWAYS follow the rules. Don't ever let yourself cheat. EVER. Once you start bending the rules, it's a slippery slope, and you want to protect your 'pouch' at all costs!

Protein shakes... yes, I've had my share. I haven't found a single one that doesn't have that 'medicinal' taste, at least of some sort. The one that I prefer is called 'AmazeRx'. My lap-band surgeon sells it out of his office, but I'm sure you could find it. I usually only buy the Vanilla Cream flavor, because that mixes best with fruits & other stuff.

The way I make mine is with milk, and I'll add some fresh fruit, put it in the blender. Great for every day.

For a special, frozen-type drink (it's thick like a real milk-shake), I put the protein powder, milk, a bit of 100% apple juice, and FROZEN fruit (not fresh) in the blender. It is SO yummy, thick and tasty.

Good luck!

It really doesn't take that long to throw fruits (and/or veggies) in a blender with a bit of milk and protein powder and make it fresh. You'll have much less sugar and it'll be WAY healthier. If you wash your fruits and veggies when you get them, it'll make things easier and quicker.

If you *have* to have the premade, I'm not sure, but I can ask my friend what his dad used before his surgery.

Good luck hon!!

I'd use Reliv Now or Classic - 20 minutes from swallowing to cellular penetration, 90+% absorption, with all the vitamins/minerals and trace elements you need, all in one formula. Lots of bang for the buck! You won't be able to take vitamin pills (no one should, really - so hard on the stomach and so little absorption), so you can get it all in one product - high absorption means less work for your body to digest it. It's not pre-mixed which is excellent (you don't want that either - emulsifiers to keep them from separating, and emulsifiers are hard to digest. Pre-mixed products with or without emulsifiers tend to break down so they aren't as effective. Reliv has received 8 patents on a product line of 14 products - which is very difficult to do. Everything is tested, based on clinical data, guaranteed. You need a referral from a trained consultant so that you will get whatever follow-up you need - it's a great feature that no other company offers. Let me know if you want more info. You can't get better than this, and the company also has a phenomenal humanitarian mission feeding kids all over the world in feeding stations, clinics and orphanages.

By the way, NO money goes into commercials or celebrity endorsers - it all goes to research and testing, and the products are made in the US under near pharmaceutical grade conditions. You won't find much else that isn't outsourced to other countries or with lots of money into overhead.

I make my own and it takes less than 1 minute including blending time... I use a scoop full of whey vanilla ice protein powder (On, Gold Standard)a banana, about 1 cup of skim milk a teaspoon of coco powder and 3 ice cubes. These drinks are so good I actually crave it every morning.
(If you do not have it already I recommend you get a blender that that mixes your drink in the serving cup. I use to have a Magic Bullet but I now have the Cuisenart blender). Good luck!

A girl in my office has had the lap band procedure and is in the same boat in terms of a lot of protein shakes. She is doing very well and following all the rules and is looking for super high protein grams. She likes the pre mixed brand called "premier protein" it had 30 grams per serving and I think she gets them at HEB or Costco. She is a big foodie and will not compromise of flavor ,etc.

I like the meal replacement from advocare, but not sure what the protein amount is, but they are lower in sugar and Yummy, but not pre-mixed.

Good luck!
