Property Taxes

We received a mail-out from O'Connor & Associates, a company that protests your property taxes for you. There is no fee unless you receive a reduction. We protested our taxes last year but lost. Anyone done anything like this before or used this company? It's too late for this year, but seems interesting for next year.

What can I do next?

We received a letter and referral to that company from a neighbor who sent the letters to everyone on our street because he knew that our taxes were all unfairly raised this year. I responded online by requesting that they appeal for us, but it was last week, almost the deadline (which was today because the 31st was on Saturday). Unfortunately, I haven't heard back from them so I don't know if they accepted my request or if it was too late. I'll have to contact them. At any rate, the neighbor had a lot of experience with the company, is a realtor as well as personal experience, and I figured what have I got to lose since I wasn't going to do anything myself, so I went ahead with it. I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

Calculate the fee and see if it really saves you money. The way they work is their fee is based on the initial assessed value before they protest and what the value ends up being afterwards. Your total taxes may still go up, just not as much as if they weren't protested. Then figure the fee in and see if you come out on top.

It is an easy process to protest your property value, and you can do it yourself for free.
