I believe the fire dept will do it for you for free. (There is one on Sepulveda near Magnolia.) You might want to call the non-emergency number and ask.
My son is 8 months old and has outgrown his current car seat both in height and weight. We bought a new car seat and want it professionally installed for maximum safety. Does anyone know who to call in the Sherman Oaks area? Thanks.

I can't remember the man's name I think it was John F. something, but he works at the Audi dealership on Van Nuys. He inspects car seats and helped me learn houw to put mine in correctly. I thin sent my parents over there to make sur there's was good. It's a free service. Just call the Audi dealership on Van Nuys Blvd and ask for the car seat guy...
Marc Cohen will come to your home and install for free. He is certified, and also is a certified instructor (teaches others how to become certified). His email address is cawgcp at sbcglobal dot net.
The highway patrol helps install car seats, you can call one in your area and see where the closet station is that does it. They prefer that you put it in the best to your ability and then they will correct it for you - we did this and they are very good with some excellent tips and it's free.
There's a woman who does it at the Juvenile Shop on Ventura. Call them to find out what day. She also makes house calls!
contact your local CHP - you can make an appointment with them and they will show you how to install it for free - I've used them in the past and had excellent results

The person I go to is great. She is a certified car seat installer and works at The Children's Orchard in Woodland Hills. Just a little further than Sherman Oaks, but she is fantastic. Her name is Catalina and her number is:
###-###-####. It's $40 for the installation, or if you spend $35 in the store, it's free.
Hi R.,
The California Highway Patrol has an infant car seat inspection program. They inspect car seats in your car to make sure that they are installed properly and will educate about car safety for children. Below is the website that lists all the locations and contact info. I'm not sure, but even if one is not happening in your area right now, you might be able to ask them to inspect yours anyway. Not entirely sure, but you can give them a call or check out the website. Here are the phone number and website:

One other resource to check is local Kiwanis clubs. Kiwanis is a service organization that does community service related to children. They spend a lot of money to fund car seat checks as well. Those are more of special events that happen annually though. If they don't have one coming up, there's a good chance that they would have a resource for you.
I hope that helps. What a smart question to ask! The statistics are staggering about the percentage of car seats that are installed improperly. I really commend you for having such foresight!
All the best,
M.
