I have an interview tomorrow and ther person that scheduled it said to wear professional attire, I was going to wear this skirt http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=79586&vi... with a top that is similar to his in navy http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=72260&vi... with nice dressy sandles, but i also have a pair of black dress pants that i could wear with a black top with red design on it. thas about as "professional" as i have, and i do not want to go out and buy a whole new outfit not knowig if i will get the job or not. which do you think would be better? the skirt outfit i would be more comfortable in as its less stuffy

That is what I was wondering, i do not dress up at ALL i am a tee and jeans gal, so the dress pants and shirt will probably be it then.

the interview is with Vecter marketing if that helps at all.

What can I do next?

Scam alert!!!!

As others have said - I too interviewed with them in college. First interview is with 30 other interviewees.

They play a video about cutco knives - I sat there for 45 minutes and watched almost everyone in my interview get up and walk out. I left also.

You'll get hired if you want - but you don't want. You have to buy the full set to take and demonstrate, and then it's a "hard sell" for each order.

Seriously - skip it. Tons of places will hire you for more money and no scam. Even Walmart or pizza delivery would be a step up.

But wear whatever you want - jeans and t-shirt is fine. About 1/2 the people I "interviewed" with wore exactly that.

Is this Vector Marketing?

You need to google that company--might not be worth the gas money to get there....

Btw, the skirt is not appropriate, nor is the top.

Go with the pants and black/red top but at the very least--a jacket or cardigan jacket with it.
Good luck!

The top has slits in the sleeves, otherwise nice, but the skirt is tiered and patterned and kind of ruffly. I wouldn't wear this. Professional attire is not full of slits, flowery patterns, tiers, and ruffles.

Crisp white button down shirt, black, brown, khaki, or navy slacks or pencil skirt, just at or below the knee. Low heels or closed toed flats.

Definitely go with the black pants.

Also, do you mean Vector Marketing? (Instead of Vecter.) If you do mean Vector, it's selling Cutco knives. (The jobs are usually advertised for students, and say $15 per hour. Something like that.) I went to an interview with them while I was in college. You have to find the people to sell them to, they give no references. They want you to hit up your family, friends, and strangers. It's a big scam, actually. I just thought I'd warn you, in case you are interviewing at the same place.

Don't waste your time interveiwing with Vector Marketing. You will be running all over the place trying to sell poorly made --- way overpriced knives to unsuspecting people. Your gas --- your time --- and you could end up homeless because you can't make your rent.

You would be better off getting a job at a local grocery store or other retail place.

If you are serious about becoming a professional sales person go to school and study marketing and then only work for well known and good companies.

I have over 30 yrs sales and sales management experience. I could give you a list of companies to stay away from.

Sorry, but that's not even close to professional. Professional means a SUIT or business dress and dress shoes. Not a summer skirt, t-shirt and sandals - that's business casual.

Can you borrow something from a friend? Dress pants or business skirt (navy, black or gray pencil skirt that goes to the knee) and a nice blouse or twin set could be worn instead of a suit, and you need closed-toe pumps or flats. If you don't have a friend or family to borrow from, is there a consignment shop or goodwill that you could go to? The one near me has a surprising array of suits and dresses that would be appropriate for an interview.

I can see that you're leaning towards the pants and shirt, which is good, but you MUST wear something besides sandals on your feet.

Looks very casual to me, especially the top with the cut out shoulders.
Keep it simple and sleek. You can never go wrong with black slacks and a nice top or blouse! Just make sure everything is pressed, and don't show too much skin :)

That is not what I would consider professional attire but I am in accounting. We look like we are on our way to a funeral, ya know?

Thing is if they said professional attire there is a reason and they will expect it. If I were you I would invest in some professional attire. You will always get use out of it, people die you know? :p

Oh yeah, Vector is Cutco. I have them, I love them, I don't need any more. :p You better know some people who are either rich or know a good knife. No one else will buy them.

The first outfit that you posted is not professional attire. It's absolutely cute - but not appropriate if you're trying to show a new company that you could be a professional. Professional/business clothes are not ruffled and do not have flowery prints - so the skirt is out. And the cut sleeves on the top wouldn't be allowed in some offices. Most business tops would have long or at least three quarter length sleeves.

Like a few other posters, I would hit up a thrift store to see if you can find a nice suit (pants or skirt) that fits. Nothing with ruffles, large prints, shows skin, etc. Just something very simple. Oh - and no sandals! You need closed toe heels, less than 2 inches high.

PS. If the job is to sell the Cutco knives, I wouldn't bother buying any new clothes. Honestly, I wouldn't even go to the interview unless you're looking to be a sales person who works strictly on commission selling to friends and family. (sorry)

The O.N. outfit is cute, but not professional.

Professional attire would be a dark pants/dress suit or slacks and a blouse with a jacket and pumps.

The skirt could be business casual, but not the top, and it is certainly not business professional. Do you have a button-down blouse or any sort of black dress jacket to wear over the top you describe? Closed-toed shoes only.

I think the Old Navy outfit is cute, but it's too casual for an interview where they asked you to dress professional.

I know you don't want to go out and buy a whole new outfit, but it wouldn't hurt to have at least one good outfit to wear to interviews.

When I was 17 I got sucked into that Vector marketing thing a little. I went to the "interview" which was just a bunch of us in a room watching a couple videos and being shown the knives we were going to go door to door to sell. So I would say that if it was anything else, wear the pants, but for this job I don't think it matters!

Business attire would be a suit or a solid colored skirt and nice blouse. (Black, navy or brown skirt or slacks and a white or tan blouse short or long sleeve). Sandals are NOT business attire. Find a nice pair of flats or something with a small heel. No flashy colors or strappy type shoes.

I am sure other colors would be fine too just nothing with crazy print or blinding colors.

Good Luck.

I think the skirt and top are a little unprofessional for the interview. With dressy sandals, you might look more like you are going to a party. They might be okay for the job but you won't know that until you get into the company and see how others dress. The skirt might work with a more formal top or a plain blazer but that's the best I can say. Unless you know for sure that the company is not "stuffy" at all, I'd err on the side of caution. If it's an art gallery, something funky might work. If it's a company, I'd say no.

Good luck in the interview!

If the job says "professional attire", you'd be safer to dress up. Go for the dressier options. Business casual would mean dressy sandals. I think professional attire means suits and pumps. Good luck!

If you don't get the job, you will need to interview for OTHER jobs, so you will need an interview suit. Black, navy or grey. You don't have to spend a lot of money to do it. Go to Target, Dress Barn, Ross, Marshalls, even thrift stores and find a suit. You will get wear out of it, even if you're not a suit wearer. You want to get a suit that feels comfortable, but makes you look like you actually care about getting the job and how you present yourself.

Vector Marketing is selling Cutco knives door to door, or getting your friends to purchase them.

A few of my daughters friends got into this, and they just wore, pants and tops with sandals and got hired.

I do a lot of interviews and I would recomment the black trousers and possibly even a jacket if you have one.......otherwise the top would be okay too................unfortunately you have to sometimes be stuffy in order to be professional looking :-)

The skirt and top are not appropriately businesslike. Business attire (especially when an employer is serious enough about it to require it for an interview!) means solid colors, formal cut, and definitely a jacket. If you have time by now, and you have a very good thrift store or consignment store in your area, get there pronto and find a suit or at least a blazer or other businesslike jacket and a plain blouse, neckline higher than the one on the web site, and a plain straight skirt -- no ruffly, patterned "peasant skirt" like the web one. A jacket or blazer is pretty much the very definition of business attire, frankly, unless you have a very formal-looking blouse. (At least here in the DC area....)

No sandals, even "dressy" ones. Closed toes, pumps preferred, but not high heels- those are not businesslike at all. I know you don't want to shop and don't have much time but the items on the web sites are not going to meet the business definition. The black shirt and black dress pants WITH a blazer might make it in a pinch with closed toe shoes, but the dress pants need to be truly dress -- not tight anywhere, not capri length, not patterned or embellished.

Many consignment stores are used by women who are professionals to sell off their work suits and blazers so you might do well at a good consignment store! Around here there are ones where "Junior League" type professional women sell off expensive goods at prices the rest of us can afford. I feel for you -- it's tough to come up with a specific outfit just the day before an interview when it's not stuff in your closet already! Good luck with the interview!

This outfit is cute, but it is not what would be considered "professional". "Professional attire" usually means tailored suit (pant or skirt) and closed-toe (maybe peep toe these days) pumps (no higher than three inches). This kind of investment can go a long way. You can always look around when you get there at what other people are wearing and make your decision once you get the job. You do not want them to make the decision not to hire you based on your outfit. The outfit will get you through the door.

I always opt for the professional attire.
Esp if you want the job so I say where the black dress pants & the black
top w/the red design.
Good luck!

For future jobs, you should get one suit. You can get a cheap one at Ross
stores. Get a neutral color like navy. Great for interviews & making a
professional impression.

For some reason I could not open the old navy photo of the skirt - so I can't comment on it - other than the descirption says it's tiered tea lenth - so it doesn't really sound right (a straight skirt, just above the knee - no shorter would be right). But the shirt isn't professional attire - the shoulder cutouts make it casual - even a tiny bit suggestive. Nor sure what type of job you're interviewing for - but I would suggest black dress pants, closed toe shoes (sandals are never appropriate for an interview) and a collared shirt, or solid colored shirt with an open front sweater. Never show cleavage. An ideal outfit is black dress pants, black "dressy" t-shirt and a sweater or jacket of a solid color (bright blue, teal, red, pink, etc.)

I'm not sure but it seems that the generation of 20-somethings really don't have much of an idea of business professional attire - I think it's because you grew up in a much more casual era than I did (heck when I was about 5 - 7 y mom was still making me wear white gloves when we dressed up for holidays or fancy parties! and pants were not allowed on girls at school until I was in junior high!)(can you imagine!!!)

Best of luck with your interview. You were smart to ask about your outfit!
