Problem W/ Breast After Weaning, Please Help

My son has been completely weaned for about 3 wks, now but I'm having problems w/ my left breast. It is still very hard on the outside area, next to armpit & very painful. So painful that my upper arm, shoulder &neck hurt. It seemed to take a while for me to stop producing milk, even though I feel I weaned slowly, dropping a feed every 2 wks. My right breast seems back to normal / at least close, nothing like my left. My doc office said to give it more time & bind my breasts. I have been doubleing up on bras, wearing a sports bra over regular bra. Is there anything else I could be doing? Also, I feel like the pain i'm having isn't typical, should I contact my doc office , again? I hate bothering them for something non-emergent / something they can't really do anything about.

What can I do next?

hot compress and massage and try to express manually.. Its scary when you have a clogged boob, but they usually do fix themselves eventually with a little help. If you really feel it may be something more by all means go back to the doc and have it checked out.

Heat helps. A warm bath with breast submerged is best. even tho it hurts you need to massage it. Your duct is clogged. Pumping or having your little one suckle will help too.

It sounds like a clogged duct. Just try to express it on your own and try some hot compresses. Even after I finished weaning my daughter, I was getting minute amounts of milk for months afterward. I stopped bf almost 2 years ago and I had a clogged duct about a month ago. It happens. It will hurt like hell when you express it, but bear through it and it will clear up much faster if you can get that junk out of there.

If you start getting a fever, or the sore area turns an ugly red with streaks, go to the doc. Other than that, they can't help much. Good luck!

To help dry yourself up better put a cabbage leaf in your bra, the shinny side to your breast. Change it every hour. Also take some ibprophen for the inflammation. Use a warm compress and massage, it does sound like a clogged duct. You may even want to try and pump. If you can suckle baby place his nose in the direction of painful spot. I got a bad one 2 years after I quit feeding and thought it was a lump went in and found out it wasnt.

It sounds like you weaned slowly enough but what you describe to me sounds like a clogged duct. I would go see your doctor before you get an infection.

I agree that it's a plugged duct. I think binding didn't help though - more pressure on a plugged duct just gets it worse. I second the suggestions of trying cabbage or warm water before expressing it out.

Sounds like you could have a plugged duct or mastitus. You may want to get it checked out. Otherwise I would try Cabo Creme. I used it with my first when I weaned and it helped so much. http://cabocreme.com/ShowPage.asp?id=155 Baby Mother & More use to carry it but they're out of business. However someone told me they're still selling online? I'm not sure. The website is www.milksmile.com You could also try crushing cabbage leaves and putting those on your breasts. Also check out tips from www.kellymom.com It's a great site.
