Probing Scheduled for Blocked Tear Duct

My son who is a little over 9 months old has had a blocked tear duct in his right eye since birth. It is usually goopy in the morning with mucus, and his eye pools with his tears. I've done the massaging pretty diligently, and his duct hasn't opened. We saw an optomologist (who we loved!) a few weeks ago, and she confirmed the diagnosis. He's scheduled to have a probing done in that eye this upcoming monday..and I was wondering if any other M.'s had to get this done for their baby. The doctors recommend getting the probing done before 1 year of age so that they don't have to sedate them for the procedure. It gets harder to hold them still as they get bigger. My son will get numbing drops placed in his eye, but will have to be swaddled and his head held very still for the procedure, which only takes a minute or two. It's not supposed to hurt during or after, but I'm still nervous about the whole thing. The success rate is supposed to be pretty good for this, but just wondering what others' experiences were. Thank you! I guess I need a little bit of encouragement =)

So What Happened?

So we ended up getting the probing done on my 10 month old son's right eye a week ago. The procedure took about a minute, and didn't seem to bother him after it was done. He was taken into another room, but we could hear him crying when they swaddled him to keep him still. His crying stopped the second it was over. I'm so happy we got the procedure done, because according to our opthomologist, there was no way that his tear duct would have opened up on it's own. No wonder the last 10 months of massaging didn't work for me! I guess when she goes in with the very thin probe, she can feel where there's blockage. It turns out that his duct was blocked in 3 places! His eye was still teary and crusty for a few days after..and I thought the worst and assumed it didn't work. However after 3 days..his eye was clear and has been every since! It's so great to not have to fight him to clean his eye everyday. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!

I'm sorry to hear that you and your family are going through this, what a pain. My daughter had a blocked tear duct when she was a couple of weeks old but fortunatly it cleared up with some drops.

I wanted to let you know that I had a horse that had a blocked tearduct that had to be probed and flushed. I assume that the procedure is pretty much the same for humans as it is for horses. It didn't take very long and the horse didn't need sedation. She tolerated it well and her eye was 100% the next day.

I know it's not much but I hope it helps to put your mind at ease. Best of luck for you and your family.

My daughter's tear duct was blocked and we went through the goopiness, etc. We waited until she was a year and it eventually opened up. I was really glad not to have to go through with the surgery to unblock it. You might want to just wait it out.

Carol, the solution that worked for me is similar to what you have been trying, but a little different. Some may find it odd, but it worked for my daughter who had a blocked tear duct as an infant. In addition to 2-3 times a day gentle massage of the tear duct, the midwife that helped deliver her suggested a drop of breast milk in the affected eye helps. There's no way to know if this will work, but it's benign and who knows?

Best of luck to you in making this decision, and also in your upcoming move back "home."

My first son had a blocked tear duct that took until almost a year to open - we were so glad, as it was down to the wire! He was a preemie, so he saw an optometrist 3 times in his first year, and she wasn't too concerned. Then my second son had both eyes with blocked tear ducts, but they both fixed themselves after a couple of months. I understand the need to do the procedure when you don't have to sedate, but could you wait just a little longer?

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

My 7 month old has blocked ducts in both eyes but we've been told to wait until a year.. I'd love to see the response you've gotten because I'm pretty nervous about it too.

Thanks!
