Private Insurance, SSI Medicaid and Children's Special Health Care

Does anyone have any experience with SSI Medicad and CSHC? My daughter is currently on both as she was born premature and now has a tracha nd feeding tube. SHe has always had both of these insurances as I have not had a job that has had insurance. Her father and I want to get married and his job he currently has will eventually give him insurance. I know most privatized insurance doesn't cover waht medicad and cshc does in regards to equipment and nursing services. SHe is hopefully going to be able to have her trach removed in May in a lenghty surgery if everything goes right and then I wouldn't mind putting her on his insurance when he gets it. However, if things aren't successful and she has to keep her trach longer than I don't want to put ther on his insurance. I know some people have medicaid as a secondary insurance and I know they can't totally take it away from her as she receives SSI. So I guess I am wondering if anyone has any experience with any of this or has any advice for what is the best route to go. I'm not sure what the privatized insurance will be or what it covers.

Thanks in advance
J.

Your Medicaid will cover whatever the private insurance won't. You shouldn't have to do anything special. The only problem I have went through is that my kid's doctor won't second bill so I have to pay co pays. So just make sure you know how yours will bill.

J.,

I have been through the SSI thing with my daughter and even though she was denied at the time (we're re-applying soon), she does and my other 3 kids also do receive Medicaid. This is in addition to the private insurance that we have through my husband's employer. As far as I learned during the SSI stuff that I learned, your daughter can receive Medicaid for as long as she is on SSI, I believe that they can't take that away from her, even with private insurance. I would say for you to contact your caseworker for Medicaid and explain the situation. It's not something that has already changed, so there is nothing for them to change or take away right now, you just have some questions that need answering. Good luck to you and I will say a prayer for a successful surgery for your precious baby.

My 12 yr. old daughter receives SSI and Medicaid. It's been forever since she had CSHC. She has Health Plan of Michigan and I personally love it. She can go to any doctor, since it's "straight Medicaid". She did have BCBS when her father was working and that became her primary and Medicaid became the secondary. I did not have any co-pays because of the Medicaid. Don't quote me on this, but if you two are married and he has insurance, he has to put her on it. You will have to let Medicaid know, of course. I wish I could help you more!

I would talk to the private insurance company before you do anything, because most of them will not cover a pre-existing condition for a set amount of time (usually a year).

My cousin's daughter has a trach, and alot of other medical issues, she will be on medicaid the rest of her life. What medicaid doesnt cover her husbands insurance covers. Private insurance is extrememly expensive and most times wont start new coverage on a child with extreme medical conditions. You might get lucky with your husbands insurance, and the might pick her up with no problem. But you really wont know until you talk to a insurance agent.

Hi, I don't know anything about cshc..., in fact I had never heard of it before now. BUT I do know that they will take away the ssi and medicaid if your husband and you make too much money between the two of you. My niece and my nephew are both on ssi and medicaid, and whenever my bil is living with them ssi takes both away bc he makes too much money. Another thing I have been told in the past from caseworker's is that medicaid is one of the best insurances around and that if you qualify for it, it is best to keep it. But if you and her dad are already living together..., I don't think you would need to worry about it bc they would know what he makes. I think I would just keep everything, and not worry about your to be hubbies insurance, unless of course it is free lol. You can always add her to the insurance later on if she loses it. (it is state law that if you show proof of losing medicaid, even if it isn't normal enrollment time for your works insurance, they have to let you enroll)

My son, who was born with a heart condition, also has Children's special health care services. From what I understand, it covers anything that other insurance doesn't in regards to her condition that she was first enrolled for. For example, we had Blue Cross through my husbands employer in February when he went to the cardiologist, the blue cross didn't cover the whole office visit and tests so CSHC was billed and paid the rest. Our CSHC case worker said never to pay anything for his heart condition. We should have no out of pocket expences. Now, there was a time we had Medicaid also. At that time Medicaid paid the bills and CSHC only covered as you said nurses and equipment that medicaid didn't. You should talk to your CSHC worker about what is and isn't covered when you change insurance. I'm sure you'll find they will pick up a few things they currently don't. Just make sure CSHC has names of all doctors and services your daughter needs and uses. Take care!

My step daughter has childrens special health care for her ears specific. We have always had private insurance also, the cshc covers all of our copays. So we dont have any out of pocket expenses, for her ears specifically.

If it is reasonable to add her to his insurance, I would do it, just to save the state some money. If not I wouldnt worry about it.
