Preventing Pregnancy W/ Mini-pill, Stopped Nursing, Is It Still as Effective?

Hi Ladies,
I've stopped nursing, but still just taking the minipill (Jolivette) to prevent pregancy. I am very careful to take it every 24 hours....but a little worried it may not be as effective now that I've stopped nursing? I cannot use anything w/ estrogen due to my medical history. Hubby is not ready to shut the door on possibly having another baby, so a vasectomy is not in the near future. I had the Mirena IUD w/ terrible results, so that is out. Just wondering if anyone has had success w/ just using the mini-pill after stopping breast feeding? Or any unintended pregnancy stories? YIKES! Also, I am contemplating Depo-provera shots...any opinions on those?
Thanks in advance! ~~L.

Added: Yes...we could always use barrier methods (condom, diaphragm), but would prefer not to.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

While I can't speak to the mini-pill issue, I noticed that you commented on not being able to take anything with estrogen due to your medical history. While I don't know your specific issues, I too can't take estrogen as the hormones trigger high blood pressure (which I don't otherwise have). I was told that while your system reaction can vary based on different administration methods, the Depoprovera shots are absolutely not an option to try as once the shot is in your system they can't take it back out. If I start to have a reaction there isn't anything they can do to stop it since it's already been administered. Depending on what your medical issues are with estrogen, please keep that in mind when considering the shots. Unlike a daily pill you can stop taking or the Nuvaring or Patch you can remove, there's a whole months worth of hormones administered all at once. Definitely talk this through with your doctor thoroughly if it's something you consider further.

All the best to you!
A.

After my son, my OBGYN, put me on the mini-pill and said when I was done with BF we'd move to something stronger. I'd talk to your doctor about your options. I've bounced from one form of BC Pill to another, but no experience with shots or IUD's, as my family history with has not been fantastic.

My sister has done the shot, and she experience increased weight gain, severe headaches and had issues with bleeding and spotting but, lost her regular cycle.

Again, that's just my sister. There are a lot of options out there, make sure you talk to your doctor and discuss your needs.

Good luck!

Hi L.,
I read the first part of this and knew i needed to respond! I breast fed my son for 15 months and was on the mini pill, same one you are on! When my son was 16 months i found out i was 5 weeks pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! totally unplanned but of course we were excited! My dr told me AFTER i found out i was preggo, that it is NOT...NOT effective if you are NOT breastfeeding! So this time i went and got a Mirena!
My daughter is now 14 months. They were born almost on the same day!
I know you said the Mirena is out but i would definetly call your obgyn and get on new birth control and give it a month to work before being safe :)
good luck!

Hi, yes you can get pregnant. My husband and his ex wife had baby #2 while breastfeeding and on the mini pill. Have you ever considered natural family planning?

Are you sure you want to put all of those harsh chemicals in your body? Can't your hubby just wear a condom?
