Hi B. -

Yes, you can save the other half of the solutab for the next day. My son was on it too for a few months. His script came in blister packs, and I'd just save the blister pack when I opened it, put the other half of the tab back in, then folded the pack over on itself until the next morning. They're okay just as long as they don't get wet. Keep them cool and dry and you should be fine. Best of luck!

Hi B.---I would agree with others and say the pill is still good. However, I would like to also ask if you are at all concerned about giving your baby such a potent medicine.

I's like to share a little about my background. I am extremely passionate about health education, and, as a result, I am taking a series of wellness classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. I have seen alot of posts on mammasource about babies and prevacid type meds. Most drugs like these, given to children, have not been tested on children and are not likely approved for this use. Once approved by the FDA, doctors are free to prescribe for conditions and groups other than those in the original study.

I attended a health seminar this weekend and a speaker and fellow 'student' was a pediatrician who practices integrative medicine. She uses natural methods first, saving meds for acute needs or as a last resort. I asked her about the trend to prescribe prevacid for babies.

She shared this with me. This acid reflux problem can be addressed in a short time by either one of two options. First, if breastfeeding, you have to find out what you are eating that is causing the problem. This means an elimination diet until you find the culprit. The other option if feeding formula is to give the baby a predigested formula, which is what breast milk is. It is more expensive, but isn't your baby's health worth it?

I have some tips and suggestions that Dr. Miles shared with me. If you are at all uncomfortable with giving your daughter these meds, feel free to give me a call. It would be honor to help you with this. Good luck and I hope to hear from you soon. In health, D. ###-###-####

The best thing to do is just call the drug store/pharmacist and ask them. Some pills can be cut in half, others you can't.

My son used to take half a pill every day before he weighed enough for a full one. Our pediatrician told me to dissolve the whole pill in a syringe, then give half the dose and refrigerate the remainder for the next day. This did NOT work. Much easier to just cut the pill in half and do it that way. I put the pill right into a Y-cut nipple and add water, then give it to him that way so the beads don't get stuck to the sides of a bottle or stuck in the syringe.

Hi! Sorry to hear that your little one has to be on Prevacid in the first place but at least she is getting help :) My little guy has been on Prevacid since about 3 months old, he's almost 5 now!! But as far as I know you would have to throw the other half away, I'm pretty sure once you open the package you have to either use the medicine or discard it w/in 15 mins. (give or take a little I'm sure). But I would check w/your doctor just to be sure you aren't wasting good medicine :) Hope that helps and good luck! If you have any more questions about the meds just let me know!!

As long as it is not passed the expiration date, it should be okay.

If you could give her something natural, would that be a better alternative for you and her?

Our stomachs do need some acid to help dissolve food, no matter what age.

Just a thought.

Good luck and God Bless.

If solid pills can be cut in half they are safe to use.
It doesn't change their potency and does not make them go bad. It saves money ib the long run

You can absolutely give it the next morning! There are many people who have to cut their pills in half and it's not a problem.

HI B.,
I am sorry for the loss of your son. I lost a granddaughter to a heart defect nearly 7 years ago.
As for your question, why is your daughter on this medication at age 3 months? All babies spit up to some degree and these medications are not harmless. It is now known that long term use of these acid suppressing drugs is causing osteoporosis and other health issues, as it interferes with the absorption of calcium and food. There are other more natural ways of dealing with "acid reflux"- we need acid to digest our food properly. Your daughter would benefit from a probiotic. Shaklee makes one in a powder form that could easily be mixed into a child's bottle. Please investigate alternative ways to deal with your daughter's problem - I hate to see young children placed on these medications that have side efects.
Sincerely,
M.

You can definitely use it the next day. My son takes it half at a time too. You only have to discard it within 15 minutes if you put it in water. I keep it in a prescription bottle and it's fine.
