I would like to put my sons ultrasounds into a collage to hang on the wall in my front room with his birth picture. Has anyone ever successfully done this without them fading???

Thanks for any advice given.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who has responded. There are a couple of suggestions I got to laminate the ultrasounds, and I just wanted to let you know that my ultrasound technician told me NOT to do this because they are on thermal paper and will turn completely black. They just never told me how to keep them from fading.

I will probably do as the photo & imaging person suggested, and take them in to a photo lab and have them processed there, instead of instanting copying and printing them myself.

Thank you SOO much for all the advice. The ladies here are incredibly helpful!

I laminated my 1st sons ultrasound and that was a BAD idea - so do not do that. With my second son, we took the ultrasound pictures to Kinkos and had them copy them and enlarge a little bit and they are beautiful. I would definitely recommend having a customer service person at Kinkos copy them - they will be preserved and you will not have to worry if in the future the picture fads.

Good luck - Jamie

laminating will preserve it as long as it stays sealed.

Actually, I will chime in here since digital cameras and processing is in my line of work. If you want them to be preserved, take them in to Wal-Mart or any other 1 hour photo processing place and scan them in, have THEM PROCESSED THROUGH THE PHOTO LAB. Kodak's "Picturemaker" is an instant print and is not any different than printing your pictures at home. They are "copies" and not true chemically processed pictures. The problem with this is that they do not last as long and if you spill water or submerse them (say as in your house floods) you can kiss them goodbye along with paying the overpriced amount they charge (double the 1 hour price usually). I scanned mine in and arranged them in my son's scrapbook when I was done with them-Here is a link to the example page.

Have fun with them but keep the originals stored in a cool dark place (they are printed on heat sensitive paper so will turn black if left out and especially if kept under glass).

Ditto Kim! They even told me to do this at the hospital as the ones they give will fade over time.

The best advice is to keep it away from light. I keep mine in my son's baby book, though have made some color copies on cardstock, to hang around. I took a picture of it on a tripod, then made the copies from that photo. I was even afraid of the laser of the copier. It turned out great! And whatever you do, do NOT get it laminated! it will turn black! They print them on thermal paper, which cannot handle any heat whatsoever

Whatever you do, DO NOT try to laminate them-the heat from the laminating machine will darken them irretrievably. My advice is to scan them onto your computer, and the print out a copy of the ultrasounds (photocopying them will work as well). The printouts will not be photosensitive (as the originals are), and you can treat them as any other picture. I would keep the original ultrasounds in an envelope in a baby book so that they won't fade with time.

We scanned ours onto the computer and printed them out on acid-free photo paper. After 2 1/2 years they are still doing fine!

i took my sons ultrasound pictures to cvs and make them into picutres on the thing they have and put away the originals and displayed the pictures. that makes them alittle bigger also. you can do it on the picture makers at any drug stores or meijers

Hi M.,
I did the same thing, but in a scrapbook. What I did was scanned the picture into my computer and then printed it onto photo paper. If you don't have a scanner, you can go to CVS, Rite Aid, Walmart or anyother place that has the kodak picture maker. You can scan them on that and print them right there. You can make adjustments to them and print whatever size you want up to an 8 x 10.

Good luck! It is a great idea to remember such a wonderful and exciting time. They grow up so fast and it's nice to remember!

I did not do that...but we had one of our ultrasounds transformed in the a painting. The original picture is in tact of course. You can find some artists online who do this. It is a lovely way to display a very beautiful time... and a great art piece!

I have done this with ours and it has been just over 7 years no fading. Use ONLY acid free paper on the backround and photo tape that is acid free. Don't use glue of any kind. even if is says safe and acid free. I am speaking from a bad experience. I hope this helps you. Have a great day.
