My son went through this and occasionally does now, but not if he takes his calcium. There is a liquid calcium that you can take for kids. I use Kid-E-Calc for younger ones and an herbal calcium for when they are older. My son that had this problem takes a calcium supplement as a capsule.
Anyway, I would do that and hopefully that will vanish like my 2nd sons.
Make sure they have been checked for sickle cell anemia. It runs in my family and leg pains are one of the symptoms.
My daughter suffers from severe leg pain. otherwise known as growing pains. First our Pediatrician had us keep a journal of each time it happened and on which leg. Discuss results with the ped to make sure it isn't something more serious. For my daughter not much helps during these pains but laying with her and rubbing hard on area of her leg that she says hurts. We have seen a correlation between lots of physical activity and the pain. Sometime the pains last more than an hour, which is a long time to lay with her and also a long time for her to suffer. I will say as she has gotten older they have gotten much more infrequent. Good luck, I hope your child out grows them soon!
Calcium and Magnesium with vitamin D. It is an inexpensive miracle in a pill, liquid or powder. I buy the powder in either tangerine flavor or friut punch flavor. You can mix it in juice or just with water like tang. I serve it over crushed ice and it is good. Do read or speak to your ped or naturopath about the daily amount. It is better to start with divided doses and work up to the daily requirement. It can initially cause some loose stools which is why ( when you are deficient) you build up gradually. It sould take no longer than 2 weeks for thepains to completly go away. By the way, this is great for adults who have foot or leg pain.

My four-year-old daughter suffers from growing pains from time to time. I'll give her motrin and will massage her legs. A soak in a warm tub helps, too.
My daughter went through this too when she was 3-4. I would soak her in an epsome salt bath before bed, give her some motrin, and then massage her legs before she went to sleep. For her this seemed to work. I hope that you can find some relief for your son!
I would certainly have it checked by his ped. to be sure there isn't anything medically wrong. If not, I learned from a massage therapist (following a very painful bout) that our muscles need magnesium to relax, calcium is to contract. After I added magnesium, no recurrence. Often mag. is sold with calcium, and avail. in liquid. Be sure to check with your ped. for dose, of course.
All great ideas- if these don't work try to note if the cramps relate to days that he is sweating alot. If you notice this -it could be that he is losing potassium. Make sure he drinks plenty of fluids and milk and bananas are good sources of potassium along with greens.
