Preschooler Drags Feet When He Walks?

My son is a little over 3 and when he walks you can hear his shoes, like someone dragging his feet. It is not like cerebral palsy where a foot is actually dragged along. He can lift them when prompted, but goes right back. His preschool teacher has asked him now to not drag his feet. Not sure if he will grow out of it or if I should call pediatrician? I just don't want him to grow up with that habit, as I know adults who walk very loudly and it doesn't sound nice.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

I don't remember him doing it before, at least not the way I notice it now. He loves running and jumping so I never thought much of it, but with his teacher bringing it up, of course I got more concerned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. It has been a couple of months and he seems to be walking better. I think it was a habit, just not sure how it formed as I don't remember it when he first started walking. Anyway, he is conscious of it and we remind him to lift his feet so we don't all hear him. The marching was a good idea too. Thanks everyone!

Hi,
Of course this could be just a habit, which gentle reminders might improve. And I can see why it would seem he has great balance because he can run and jump. But there are some children and adults who have great moving balance, but difficulty with "static balance", that is balance when standing in place or when not moving quickly. So perhaps you could have him checked at your local public school for his ability to balance , forward and backward. These are standard assessments used for young children and the screening is free. If he does have difficulty with these other skills, there are exercises and therapies available to build up this type of balance and they are provided free by public school systems.

I would talk to the pediatrician about it but my stepson would do it a lot when he was 5 and there was nothing wrong with him, he was just being lazy about it.

I'd also make sure his shoes fit well...but I am afraid it goes along with the territory. It must be this age. My daughter did/does the same. It isn't nearly as bad now, but it required a lot of reminding.

I would talk to the doctor to make sure his muscles are developing the way that they should be..........It's probably just laziness on his part, but it is better to be safe than sorry.......so find out.....

You might start having him march......pretend he's in a band or something.....this will strengthen his legs and get him to pick up his feet......but do call the doctor...

Good Luck and take care......also, has he always done this?
