I could only take the over counter the prescribed vitamins had too much iron and they made me sick. Also the over the counter are less expensive.
I am pregnant with my second child and my OB told me that I could either take over the counter prenatal vitamins or get a prescription from him. I am still using a sample that he provided me, so before that runs out, I thought I would check to see if anyone had recommendations of any over the counter versions. I am not opposed to taking these, since I'm sure they will be less expensive and more than likely provide the same nutrients that I need versus the prescription vitamins.
Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions!

I used the Target brand.
I actually ended up taking Flintstones because I couldn't swallow the prenatals. I think that I'd just find a supplement that gives you what you need the way you need to take it. I also took Theratears Omega 3 because it was the easiest for me to take.
If you have insurance, you should be able to get your prescription (depending on your insurance coverage) under your insurance. I get my script for $15.00 which is comparable to the kind you get off the shelf.
When I was pregnant my Dr. told me to take over the counter cuz they were cheaper and just as good and there was no need to get a prescription and pay a high amt.
Here's a great one with an amazing delivery system. It's only $.99 a day.
I take this line of vitamins and love it. It's one of the best delivery systems out there. You will receive so much more of your vitamin as opposed to a pill.
Hope it helps.

I am taking the Kroger brand generic women's daily vitamin and my OB said it's just fine.
The most important thing is 400 micrograms of Folic Acid. Also look at the iron, it should have some (but even without the 100% RDV it would be fine). Mine cost me all of $5 for a 2-month supply!
I suggest Oligo. I use theirs for Women (not pregnant). They are more effective because you actual absorp more of their over regular over the counter ones.
I take adult "gummy" prenatal vitamins.... the regular "horse pill" variety makes my have endless fishy indigestion (with OR without food) and I only have about a 50% success rate keeping them down, no matter when I take them, day, night or with or without food. Ugh! SO, since they do me no good if they come up, I decided to try the gummies and I LOVE them, they don't make me sick or give me indigestion! Plus, they don't cost all that much!
Here is where I get mine:

Good Luck finding the right "vites" for you!

Not all vitamins are equal.
I like New Chapter Perfect Prenatal and Garden of Life Raw Prenatal.
They are both whole food vitamins. Nutrients derived from food.
Hope that helps. :)
Congrats!
Stuart Prenatal Vitamins, OTC, cost $25.99 - 100 pills per bottle; was the only pills I could stand to take everything the doctor gave me made me sick. I also took Carlson's Fish Oil made in Norway Lemon Taste, bought from health food store for $12.99.
I ordered mine from www.vitacost.com - excellent selection, and much much cheaper than buying in the store! The ones I got were Rainbow Light Prenatal One, and they were wonderful. I never got any upset stomach from them and they actually gave me more energy. $26 for 120 pills. I am actually still taking them while I nurse my baby.
I had the same exact question last week. Alot of the women told me to take the target brand. Their dr's told them they are just as good. I haven't had the chance to try them yet as I am still taking my very expensive prenatal prescription. I am def going to try them. I can't afford $120.00 for 90 day supply of vitamins. If you would like, check out my answers. Hope they help.
Hi J.,
Congratulations on your little one!
Not all prenatals are alike and just because they are prescription doesn't make them better. MOST vitamins create free radical activity (which cause health problems and disease) so you need to stock up on antioxidants to contradict the bad affects BUT you DO need additional nutrition for the baby. I use a brand that is guaranteed to absorb and doesn't create free radicals. I buy it online. The prenatal vitamin and mineral complex is $20 for a month's supply and if you add the Omegas for eyesight and brain development it's $36. If you're interested I can shoot you some info on why they are better if you're interested. Let me know.

PS Avoid Flintstones and those that you can buy at Walmart and the drug stores. It's better to not take anything than to use them.
