Pregnant with Pink Eye?

Hello all!
I am 33 weeks pregnant and woke up this morning with a nice red looking eye. My first guess is pink eye (since it felt a little crusty earlier). I can't call the OB until Monday. I have some leftover prescrpition drops from earlier this year (not expired) that I could use in the mean time. Does anyone know if it's safe to do so? I don't want to let it go untreated all weekend and I don't want my daughter or husband to get it either.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the feedback. It looks as though it was a false alarm! About 30 mins later, I noticed my eye was fine and not showing any sign of red/pinkness. I realize it could have been due to the fact I was wearing my contacts for a few hours the day before!!
Thanks again!

Yes it is OK to take them, ASAP before anyone else gets it. My doctor said it was ok when I called him over the weekend about one kid and had other kids left over drops. Just said call back if you run out for him to call in a prescription.

I got pinkeye a bit ago when I was nursing and most of the drops you couldn't use when nursing so I'm guessing pregnancy there would be limitations too. You could go to urgent care and see what they prescribe or see if you can avoid much contact with you kids. I had it and was nursing and my son never got it nor my husband.

Your OB should have an after hours number that you can call and ask if the meds are ok to use during pregnancy... Or call the hospital you are planning on delivering at and ask the maternity nurses about the meds...Or try your usual General Practitioner that you would use when NOT preggers... They should also have a dr on call that you can ask.
Its best to catch it early than to let it go on... If your dr can't see you soon then you may be able to go to the ER and get it diagnosed and meds for it.

Never use old scripts without the doctor's consent or unless they have seen it! Especially when you are pregnant! You have no idea if these are contraindicated or not.

I would make sure you are washing your hands - do not touch it, avoid as much contact with your husband and daughter as you can (don't let your daughter touch your face as this is how she can get it - or if she is on your pillow or whatever your face has touched...).

A warm wash cloth / cool cloth can help in the meantime. It's Sunday, you should be okay until tomorrow if you rest and see if Hubby can handle your daughter until then if you are really concerned. (Or if you have someone that can assist in the meantime - otherwise frequent hand washing should be fine as that is how it is spread.)

Hello A., I home remedy that works well is tea bags. Seep the bag in warm water, than lay on your back with the bag over the eye for about 10-15 minutes several times a day. The acid in black tea is what cures the problem. It wouldn't hurt to treat both eyes to prevent the other from becoming infected also. Good luck.

HI there. I do not know if the drops are safe or not but I do have a solution for you. brew a cup of Chamomile tea. When the tea bag is cool enough place it on your infected eye for 10-15 minutes. Save the cup of tea and if you still have drainage through out the day either put some drops of this in your eye or wipe you eye with a cotton ball soak in the tea. It should be gone by the following day. I hope you feel better soon.

You should call your Doctor (or go to an urgent care) I am sure they have someone on call. Hot/warm compresses help relive the symptoms a lot too and that is safe. Congratulations on your soon to be little one!

Most pink eye is viral and requires no prescription for it to resolve. Your safest bet is not to use the drops. Keep your hands out of your eyes, be careful to wash carefully, use a clean washcloth each time. If it doesn't get better in a couple days, see a doctor. Don't self-prescribe, especially when you're pregnant!

I really don't think it would hurt to use the drops you have as long as they aren't expired. There is an OTC now for pink eye anyway. Trust your gut. Keep in mind how very contagious pink eye is...keep your hands clean etc...you don't want your 5 year old to get it too. Congrats on your new sweetie! Whoops...the 5 year old is in the next post.

I'd use the drops and be super careful with towels, handwashing etc. Good luck!
