Hey moms,
I have a question for a good friend of mine. She has an IUD and has been having some trouble with it the last several months. Lots of spotting and cramping. Last month she got checked and was fine. This month she is 7 days late and is having lots of cramping and some spotting. She is pretty tough, like gave her dad a kidney etc so I know that she is really in a significant amount of pain. Of course she is worried that she could be having a miscarriage. Anyone gone through something like this to find that it was something other than a miscarriage? Could this just be a terrible reaction to the copper, she did ok for the first few months but now every month is bad. Anyone gone through something like this and been pregnant and delivered a healthy baby? Or is it most likely what we are both fearing, pregnant and miscarrying? She took a test over the weekend and it was negative, but she did it in the afternoon, so she is testing again in the morning. I have never had an IUD so I just don't know about them personally, but I would really love to be able to give her some hope.....thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the help:) She got her AF so she is good to go! She is practically a sister, so I was worried, now we can all breathe a sigh of relief!

I was one of the rare ones who got pregnant with an IUD. I went to the Dr becasue cramping got so bad and I was pregnant. They were able to remove the IUD without hurting the baby. My daughter is 6 months old now and very healthy! Hope that helps with your question

I would tell her to get to the doctor immediately if she feels like she might be pregnant. Further steps would need to be taken, I'm guessing, although I'm no doctor.

I only know of one case of a pregnancy despite and IUD, and unfortunately, it didn't turn out well for the baby. However, in that case, the mother was actually pretty far along before they found the IUD in utero with the baby (long story, but no scans found anything and they had figured that it had fallen out on it's own).

from what I know, there is a significant risk of eptopic (tubal) pregnancy when you have an IUD, in which case the baby would have to be aborted ASAP. she should go to her dr. today if possible, just to be sure. the IUD can also puncture the uterus wall, resulting in bleeding. in either case, the sooner she's seen the better.

I had the copper IUD and it led to me getting Endometriosis. I was already susceptible to it and it aggrivated it. could be that. I later got the Mirena and experienced lots of cramping and pain right at first. Turns out, it punctured a hole in my uterous and actually got out of place and they couldn't find it. I had to have emergency surgery and they eventually found it in the cavity behind my uterous. I would deffinately send her into the doctor just to get checked out.

Anyone in pain should see a doctor immediately. There could be other issues that require medical attention.
